Acquiring some prospects and weaponising capspace

1.
COL
  1. Samberg, Dylan
Additional Details:
Or Chisholm, depending on how much Jets fans value Jost.

Avs would be getting a solid LHD prospect that can replace Cole in 2021, or Graves if/when he eventually gets traded a year or two from now.
WPG
  1. Jost, Tyson [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Winnipeg get a cost-effective 3C who is good defensively and still has offensive upside to potentially break out as a 2C. He could be a great fit on a line with the wingers Winnipeg has on their 2nd line.
2.
COL
  1. Carlsson, Gabriel [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Avs get a reasonably young guy who can be a defensively solid 7D.
CBJ
  1. Kamenev, Vladislav [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Kamenev needs a new opportunity and may yet break out as a 3C.

Note that Fenton who is now with CBJ drafted Kamenev at Nashville, and CBJ love 6'0''+ centers.

NYI
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (TOR)

COL
  1. Andersson, Lias
  2. Smith, Brendan ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Burying Smith in the minors would carry a caphit of $3.275m for NYR.

NYR thus save $1.275m in capspace by trading Smith with $2m retention.

To make it worthwhile for Colorado to take on that cap NYR add Lias Anderson, and receive a 3rd back.

You think Landeskog is going to settle for less than 6 million? Makar less than that as well? If Makar wants term it's going to be Rantanen money, if he doesn't it's going to be 6+ average. Landeskog is likely going to ask for 8 as a starting point and may not budge from that. He'll argue he's the captain and is a 30 goal scorer who has other intangibles.

landeskog and makar to $8.5m each = $11m in raises, just like i said.

Yeah I wasn't quite understanding it but its all clear now. Colorado is an exceptionally well positioned franchise. No bad contracts (Maybe Johnson is a little bad but its manageable) lots of talent and a patient GM that doesn't panic and jump the gun on building a winner.

yah that johnson contract is going to be regrettable by the final year. hopefully he can win a cup this year or next and colorado can dump him on the wild and let him play for his home team.

Hmm I don't know about that. Wilde was a 2nd round pick, so a 3rd rounder isn't that far off, though Wilde does have more value as he has progressed well since the draft and is obviously closer to NHL ready.

We could offer a 2nd instead of a 3rd, but then again the difference between Wilde and a 2020 2nd is much smaller than Komarov. I'm not sure it makes sense to trade a 2nd for him unless NYI retain a bit on Komarov and/or send a pick back, but that probably isn't ideal for NYI. How about throwing in another mid-round pick, like a 5th?

Komarov + Wilde for 3rd + 5th

Or something like:

Komarov + Wilde + 4th for 2nd

Or NYI could just give up like a 3rd and B prospect to a team in order to keep Wilde. I think that might be better

Given the history between the two teams I would be shocked if Johnson went to Minnesota. That would be bit of a terrible way to send Johnson off after years of service.

His contract is maybe like $1.5-2m overpaid right now, but nothing major. By the last year it could indeed look worse, but with Byram's ELC sliding one year to make it end only in 2023 we should be OK. His role on the team should diminish enough for him to still be fresh enough to have an impact in 2-3 years so I don't think he'll get traded. Unless of course his play absolutely falls off a cliff. But even then I'm not sure we're going to want to pay what it will take to move the contract.

Thanks for your feedback, interesting thoughts.

I think Jost would be a 2C with the Jets. He has the offensive ability to keep up with guys like Connor/Ehlers/Wheeler/Laine.

The problem with him in Colorado is that he's not good enough to carry offense on his own, and isn't a natural fit next to Kadri/Burakovsky, so he gets shoe-horned on the 3rd line. He's the type of player that needs good players around him to be at his best, but if you give him that he really excels. For example, in college he played with Boeser and was lethal. After the deadline this year when we had some injuries and he got top 6 minutes and PP time he got 7 points in 9 games.

There's still a good player there for sure. I just don't think he's going to reach his potential in Colorado, as we have Kadri at 2C and Compher at 3C who are better at those roles, and also Newhook on the way.

That said, it's understandable that you wouldn't want to trade a guy with top pairing potential for him.

How do you feel about a trade around Chisholm and Jost? With that trade Winnipeg would plug their biggest hole by getting a young 2C/3C and still have Morrissey/Heinola/Samberg as their D moving forward.

As a jets fan, I’d be interested in a deal surrounding Chisholm for Jost, maybe Jets add a forward prospect like spacek? I’d be interesting to try Jost out as 2c for a while.

That probably would be better. But it will be very difficult to move capdumps this offseason without giving up a valuable piece, and I'm not sure a 3rd + B prospect is going to be enough to dump 2 years of Komarov. If it was just one year then probably, but 2 years makes it very hard.

Detroit says NO, Weren't moving Michael Rasmussen for Nikita Zadorov. Yzerman has already said that Rasmussen is our future 3C He likes what he sees in him.

Hmm, I don't think Spacek would move the needle. If he's not been good enough to earn a single call-up in Winnipeg I doubt he'd have much of a chance on a very deep Colorado team, and he's too old to really have much upside left.

Would any of Harkins, Gawanke, or Berdin be in play? Feel free to suggest a small add on Colorado's side if it would help balance the trade with one of those 3 involved.

Failing one those 3 options being included (or a higher ranked prospect) I would simply prefer if you included a pick instead of a prospect. Not sure what the value of it would be, maybe Chisholm + 3rd for Jost?

Fair enough. Would it help at all if Colorado adds something on top of Zadorov?

That’s probably a 100% fair offer to Columbus for Carlsson, but I don’t think they make it. Murray and Savard are both about to be UFAs on the back end and Jones and Werenski and in line for big paydays. Carlsson is going to be one of the guys looked at to replace Murray and Savard and possibly even Nuttivaara or Gavrikov if one of them are selected by Seattle.

Not to say that Kamenev isn’t a decent 3rd line center prospect, but he wouldn’t really get a shot with Columbus until Jenner or Nash are gone and that’s 3 years from now. Carlsson could get his shot sooner then that.

Trade is fair, we just don’t really have any interest in it right now.

I would be down for a Chisolm+ deal for Jost. THat would give the Avs some time for him to develop and hopefully take a roster spot soon. I like what you said about Jost simply not fitting in with the wingers the Avs have, opposed to where he could be a nice fit with Laine and Ehlers.

It does make sense that you'd want to keep him given those circumstances.

Is it really a given that Columbus will go with 7+3+1 protection in the ED? I think 4+4 might be a better option.

If Columbus choose to protect the players below, then you'd have Werenski/Gavrikov/Nutivaara at LHD, and therefore no space for Carlsson on the left. And likely no space on the right either with Jones/Peeke/Hjorth being the top RHD's.

Yeah I think it's a good fit for both teams.

Jets would get a young 2C who would fit nicely with good wingers and can cover well defensively.

Meanwhile, Colorado would get a young two-way LHD who is 1-2 years away who can replace Cole and/or Graves on the 3rd pair when the time comes for them to move on.

That said, Jost is much more proven, having played over 200 NHL games, while Chisholm has never played at any level above juniors. Chisholm has also gotten a big boost in his stats by playing with top prospects like Nicholas Robertson (55 goals), Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (63 assists), and Akil Thomas (almost 2ppg). His point increases year-by-year are steady, about 20 points increase each year, which is solid, but also somewhat expected for a player getting older and still playing in the same league.

Needless to say it would be a risky trade for Colorado to make as he's unproven beyond juniors. So I'd expect a reasonably good "+" to be included.

With that in mind, what would be the "plus" that you would be comfortable giving up? For ideas I made some suggestions in the post below:

Yeah I would have thought that Zadorov would be a very attractive option for Detroit, given how sparse their LHD is. Zadorov is a guy who has his warts, but he's also capable of playing shutdown minutes against opponents top lines, and also brings a physical presence that is important for a young team to have in order to not get shoved around too much.

Cool. That would be a decent little trade for both sides I think. Though it would be much riskier for Colorado. Winnipeg with a good 2C and an improved D group (from Heinola/Samberg maturing) would be a different beast, and most certainly be a lock for the playoffs.

Atkinson would be protected before Anderson. And Savard-versus-Nutivaaara would be an interesting debate. But otherwise, maybe.

I assumed here that Anderson would be resigned with some term, and have a healthy season, and being younger than Atkinson he'd be more important. But I take your point.

Savard is an UFA so wouldn't need protecting. You could still resign him on July 1st though.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Anderson would likely be gone so keep Atkinson or Nyqvist. Hjorth is likely 4-5 years away and Nuttivaara would play the right side. We could also lose Nuttivaara as a UFA in 3 years as well. It’ll be Carlsson or Kukan for the 6th d spot.
