If Murray can get consistent.
And Price would need to get back to his elite level; Holtby as well.

Only Hart is probably " guaranteed " at the current time

ID still bring price, put that team in front of him and he wont have any issues, playing for mtl has taken a toll on him, marner wont be an extra forward

Hart and Binnington are pretty much guarantees but I also think Price is. He's been consistently a top goalie for a terrible team. He carries all of Montreal on his back and he's got much more of an international pedigree than Murray.

Strongly considered Holtby but both are getting older, if they get back to their elite level of play in the next couple seasons I could see one being taken.

Lowkey the goalies should be Kuemper, Hart, Binnington, but the world isn't ready for that discussion.

No way any of the old standbys deserve to be there. Holtby, Schneider, Price, none of them cut it anymore. I wouldn't be going with Murray either.

Tavares in two years would still make it over Cirelli.

Bergeron would be 36, so who knows there too

schneider being american probbaly wouldnt cut it in the first place, put price in front of an actual team and see what happens

Hadn't thought of Kuemper but should keep him in mind. Personally, I figured that Murray's big game experience would be valued over a short tournament. I don't think it's enough to say "put that team in front of anyone they'll be fine" since other teams (USA, Sweden especially) are closing the gap in terms of talent on paper

Lmao whoops. Meant Luongo, lol.

I'm sure Price would be fine. But I think those jobs shouldn't go to guys who would be fine when playing on team Canada. Those spots should go to the most deserving players. Which is not Price right now.

fair at the same time, price has always been a stud on the international stage and if he was on a better team it wouldnt even be a question imo

We'll see in a couple years. Tavares today is a safer choice but I think he has plateaued where Cirelli still has lots of room for growth in the next two years. Cirelli also offers up another high level pk option.

Bergeron was one of the older players I left just because of the past success of that line and that he won't be tasked with the hardest defensive assignments.

What i find most baffling is that we are debating Canadas goalies, and not because there are too many good options, but because there arent enough good options. We are resorting to a Price and Holtby who are getting older and had off years, Binner and Murray who won cups with good teams but arent actually anything special themselves, and Hart who was a great young goalie with lots of potential.

Meanwhile: America and Finland are jam packed with top goaltenders

DONT GET ME WRONG: I think they are all pretty good, BUT we arent debating who most deserves to make the team, but rather who least deserves it

confused by that last line

also wouldnt call USA or Finland jam packed anymore maybe a few years ago. usa has more than finland, canada may have less goalies, but they have more gold Medals wink

Your argument is somewhat flawed because Team Canada has not resorted to Fleury, Price, and Holtby, they have been the best goalies from Canada in that year. You can't make the claim that Canada doesn't have enough good goalies and then claim that America and Finland do when Canada has more good starting goalies. The US has Hellebuyck, Gibson, and Bishop (maybe Quick too), Finland has Rinne and Rask (Raanta too if you want to count him), Canada has Price, Binnington, Holtby, Hart, Fleury, and Dubnyk (Jarry/Murray too). Canada has no shortage of NHL starters. Canada has many choices for goalies of this team, but in 2022 my bet would be Price, Binnington, and Hart with Fleury in close contention behind them.

and this is the point. @vr1995 Im saying: those Canadian goalies are very good! But my point is they arent saying "ah who is the most elite goalie right now: we have Tuukka and Pekka!" or "we have Helly and Bishop to lead the crap out of our team with Gibson bringing up the rear". its more like a "well i guess Harts probably our best rn, and then we could go with Price and Holtby, but they are a little old and falling off. Or we can go with Binner or Murray, but like they might not actually be anything special"

Its a much different debate.

Ill equte it to: Penguings: "damn who do want as our first line Center? We can go with the amazing Sid the Kid, or the also amazing and big boi Geno Malkin" (us and finland). vs The Habs who say "damn who do we want to be our top line Center? We have a Rookie who we took off the board at number 3 (Kotkaniemi), we have the 2nd/3rd line C who we love (Daneault) but isnt actually a 1st liner, or we have the two guys that are actually wingers that we play at Center (Domi / Drouin) as Canada

Does that make sense?

are you a pitt fan? I see murray here, rust on usa. No way those two make it. Much better Canadian goaltenders than murray.

I'm a Sens fan (so take it easy lol), with Murray it's a combination of thinking that Price and Holtby may take a step back the next couple years, while Murray is definitely capable of a step forward. I wouldn't be shocked if it's actually Hart starting with Binnington as back-up. Someone also mentioned Darcy Kuemper who could be a bit of a darkhorse. As for Rust, he's quietly establishing himself as a top-line winger. Again, it's just a projection for a couple years from now. Not to get wrapped up in Pitt, but was anyone thinking a couple years ago that Guentzel would be a lock on USA?
