Honestly tho, seems like they are setting up for some fat extensions to Petrovic and Huberdeau. Cap space this year can be used to pick up rentals.

So much room for activities!

NYR are looking to rid themselves of Nash's contract. It's not that he's finished...just a bad contract and they need cap space. You could honestly get him for less.

Eh, I wouldn't say NYR NEED to dump Nash, they're just trying to trim excess. He's very important to our entire team. He logs plenty of 5v5, PK, and PP time, and does all of them very well. That being said, I think the Ranger would be more than willing to move him, with salary retained even, for some picks and prospects.

I personally would like Pysyk, but you guys literally JUST acquired him from BUF so I doubt he goes anywhere.

That being said, I think a 2nd and a 3rd is a big underpayment for him.

I tend to agree but having a team take 2 years of 7.8M a year off your cap is an expensive proposition and one only a few teams can actually do. The reason NYR would want to retain some of that salary is to maximize their return. Retain enough salary so that Nash's contract is worth what he should be paid right now and you'll get what Nash value is back in return. (In theory obviously)

First off, I'm a Rangers fan. I am not taking that deal. Nash is an elite player, and even with his contract, he is valuable to the team. The only reason there has been speculation over a Nash trade is our weakness in defense and our cap situation. The thing is, we only have 1 big extension coming up until Nash's contract expires: Zibanejad. So if the return is not good, I'd rather keep Nash. The Rangers are able to absorb a big chunk of his salary to maximize the return, like marco says. But that return needs to be an NHL defenseman (preferably a puck-moving RHD) and picks/prospects. Otherwise, we're better off keeping him.

What the Panthers will do with all that cap space? Not wasting it on Nash. Smith gets a raise to 5m next year, Ekblad to 7.5m plus Huberneau, Pysuk, Petrovic still to be resigned.

Rangers should take that offer. Almost all GMs in the NHL, hell almost all GMs on Cap Friendly could spend 7.8m a year better than on Nash. Maybe you can't find the guys to replace this year, but next summer you could do it easily

The $7.8M cap space shouldn't only be thought about as Nash's cap hit, but as a team cap hit in whole. Think you could have kept Yandle or even signed another Dman? You're right that the NYR weakness is D and the NYR could address that weakness with extra cap space. I know Nash is still a viable player, but he's not really elite. Quite frankly, he doesn't play that much defense. He's still a really good goal scorer when healthy.
