Does Pietrangelo in MTL make sense

Created by: oaken
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2020
Published: Aug. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Main idea is, MTL will most likely keep Weber until he retires, but his minutes will need to be managed more and more. I Don't think it makes much sense to resign Petry (around 6m) who will be 33 next year and have him assume more and more responsibility. But he can be a solid 2nd pairing guy on a team that is either weak on the right side or wants a year to see if he would be a good fit (he has a M-NTC, but can list only 15 teams for no trade, some fit could be found for both him and the Habs). Habs also do not have enough strong prospect at RD to carry the load.

Now with the cap not going up this year and maybe next year too. It could be a good time for a team with some cap space to make a splash while other GM will have to be more conservative. Pietrangelo is an upgrade on petry and 2 years younger.

Now next year is the big puzzle, I think Seattle takes one of Mete, Byron or Lehkonen which will make some of the decision for the Habs.

At that point it's probably gonna be time to make some space for Caufield or some other young prospect. One thing i don't like about the current roster is no ELC on the wings.

With petry off the book, you have a total of 5.5m left at the en of 20-21 to help resign KK, Gally, Tuna and Danault. Unless KK has a remarkable 3rd season he will most likely sign a bridge deal. Main consequence of getting Pietr is they probably would have to chose 2/3 of Gally, Tuna and Danault. When Suzuki will be up for new contract, Alzner will finally be off the book.

Additional Details:
This could be anything, use petry as an all season rental. Habs can keep half is salary for his last season. You could also package him to try to land a prospect (maybe poulin in PIT if they dont resign schutz?). Key is Petry half price for future.

I think Pietrangelo is getting 7 years and almost assuredly over 9 million/season...

Think you're 2 mil shy on what is needed for Petro - especially on only a 6 year deal.

no, petry is cheaper and if Pitrangelo starts to regress they will be stuck with 2 aging dman who could slow down the team

Also he turned down that offer when the blues asked back in October, the guy wants a big payday

7.5 in St. Louis is more money after taxes than 8.5 in Montreal. I bet St. Louis can find the room to give him 7.5.

very possible, but i'm wondering who can offer him that St-Louis will already have 2 other RD at 5m+. Seems like They might be moving on, but of course the taxe situation is a big issue. Here i think there is some room for negotiation for 7 years.

more chances to end up with 2 aging Dman if you have to resign Petry because you have no other option after 20-21, he will also probably want terms of at least 4-5 years and he and weber are closer in age.

First off, I like it when people take the time to explain their thought process and not just post a stupid AGM. So congrats on that!

What I don't like about this particular scenario is that MTL would have roughly $27M committed to only 3 players. Great players, but all 3 are most likely declining sooner than later. I think it would me a mistake to get a $8.5M player to replace Petry, who would probably sign a 4-year extension this offseason for $6-6.5M, IMO. If not less because of the flat cap uncertainty... Remember, the cap issues affect both the players and the teams...

With a resign of Petry at 6M it's still a lot commited to aging players (7yr pietr or 4yr petry has them both locked up untill 37), in lets say 3 years you have 38yo Weber and 35yo Petry for ish 14M.
That is my main concern, targeting Pietr does feel risky, Habs would go from a team confortable with where they are with the cap to a team hoping it restart going up ASAP.

Feels like Habs need a D-Man on the rise (neither pietr nor petry in a perfect world) to slowly take responsibility away from Weber, and it seems like they will need that sooner than whatever time romanov/brook/norlinder will be ready.

Yep, they'd need a 26 year-old Petry! wink

But I realy think that Petry has 4-5 years of good hockey left. And 6M would be digestible now and even more when the cap goes up. Beit for MTL or for another team if they want to move him. I'd try to get that young stud via trade (Domi?)...
