Is Russell really that much of an upgrade over Johnson? All I ever heard about him in Edmonton is people saying how bad his contract was

He's still a decent number 6, albeit overpaid by like 2,5 mil

Russel is an insane upgrade over JJ.

He blocks shots, is good on PK and is high energy.

The oilers reject because Bjug is injured and likely won't play that much.

Russell at least is somewhat useful. Johnson is the worst player in the NHL.

He's a slight upgrade but nothing to write home about.

Big thing with that trade might be salary. Same cap but Bjugstad salary is $5.2M, Russell is $2.5M. $2.7M "savings"

But yes, Russell is not good.

Don't you know? Saad is a demigod. Edmonton should add multiple 1sts and thank Chicago for the trade in every post game interview.

Bjugstad’s contract is 4.1M with 1 year remaining there is a chance he rebounds to be a 3 or 4th line scoring center which oilers desperately need. Russels contract is 4M but only 1.5M needs to get paid so this fits with pittsburg’s goal of reducing the money they are spending on salary.

Well who would you say is worse? I’m not being cynical I’m literally asking.

He cost the pens almost 3 or 4 games this season according to advanced stats. By himSELF.

He’s on a terrible contract and combined with the fact ownership loves him creates a dangerous mix for the pens.
