Alright so basically I thought about that trade before I completed it

The original idea was

Sabers get: Drouin 500k retained, a 2020 second round pick from the Blues, and Brett Kulak.

MTL get: 8th overall pick

Don't ask why I didn't do this because the answer is I am doubtful of every thing I dodoododod

Second idea I had was

Sabers get: Drouin 500k retained

MTL get: 2020 second rounder I got from Winnipeg, Tage Thompson and Rasmus Asplund

Second trade was probably not enough
The trade I ended up doing which I will show you again here was too much

And yes I know I'm not a very good armchair gm so these probably all suck in general but y e p

Buffalo has depth at two spots LW and RD. They don’t need Drouin.

Your second trade was probably closer. The problem here is Drouin's reputation. Like Monahan, he was drafted high and is canadian so the assumption is that he's universally accepted as being pretty good.

Spoiler alert, he's not.

If he was Russian or Slovak he'd just be another kid who doesn't work hard enough. Perception drives the reality. High drafted canadian=star that needs more time. High drafted russian= "can't wait till he quits on his team"

The idea is intriguing but it can't be drouin, the Sabres need a can't miss player if they're going to move one of only two valuable trade assets.

8OA is not on the table for Drouin and the 2nd idea relies on you obtaining the WPG pick, which that deal was fair enough imo but still not a readily available asset. I personally hate Drouin so I'd even pass on the 2nd idea, but thinking analytically and not emotionally that trade is the closest

Sabres can or least should be able to find 5m to spend on UFA(s) better than Drouin and keep their pick.
