Description

I saw the Boston trade on a Bruins ACGM yesterday and actually really liked it. I'm really high on Kase, which is maybe blinding me a bit, but he's a really solid two-way player. The original post included John Moore for the Hawks to take, which I didn't hate, but he's a replacement level defenseman and for three more years at $2.75 MM, that's not the best investment. If Boston was completely hung up on us taking him, I still think I'd do it, but for now, I'm just going with the retention, which is basically the same as it would cost if we took Moore back.

As for the lineup, most of the improve is going to have to come internally. Dach, Nylander and Suter will have to keep getting better and DeBrincat and Strome both need to bounce back after relative poor seasons. Kase will be a nice boost, hopefully in time he can replace Saad's impact and I think he will. Defense is still a question mark, but hopefully Mitchell will be as good as advertised and Boqvist will take some steps forward in his development. A full season from CDH would also be a nice added bonus (fingers crossed). My hope is that Beaudin or Carlsson can come up as well at some point but seeing how well Koekkoek played this year, I think he gets the call first unless one of those two guys blows everyone away at camp.

If those steps forward are taken and we get another good year out of Crow, I think we've got a good shot at getting back to the playoffs and maybe making some more noise this time

I dont think Boston already gives up on Kase. Hes a really skilled player and I dont think theyll buy in too much on his performance after all the time off. No need to sell low

Saad is a pretty big upgrade to Kase and that's no knock on Kase but more a testament to a very good player in Saad. Hawks should pass, Kase is not who they need on the first line.

I used to say the criticism of Kase being fragile/soft were overblown...I'm not so sure now.

No thanks. And not sure why people think Bruins will trade Kase. He's looked good; just matter of time before he produces. Even though Saad is better right now, he makes $3.4M more (BOS have several free agents) and only has one year left.

I don't think it makes sense to trade Saad during the offseason. He'll garner at least a late 1st @ the TDL next year if the Hawks are out of it. If they're still in it....the Hawks will want Saad.

Yeah i think saad is a pretty decent upgrade at the moment but hes only signed one more year and I think they're hoping kase is a longer term fix on that rw. Value seems ok.

Sweeney needs his draft picks now. Already gave up a 1st to get rid of Backes. I’m ok with the trade of Kase but I would offer a prospect instead of a 2nd or the 2nd turns into a 3rd if Saad doesn’t re-sign in Boston.

The speculation on here confused me a bit too, especially given everything they gave up to get him. But if it made sense, I wanted to see what it might cost to get him. Like I said, I'm a big fan and I think he'll be a key piece for the Bruins moving forward if they keep him

I'd say Saad is probably a bit better offensively, but Kase is much better at limiting the opposition shots and chances. I think the Hawks need that right now more than anything. Maybe it's just a structure thing and readjusting Saad's role would get him back to being a better defensive player; he has the tools to be better. But I'm not sure re-signing Saad is the best plan for this team and I don't think an offer like this (an offer I'd value higher that a late 1st straight up) would be available at the trade deadline. If this came around this offseason, I'd take it

Works for me too. I'll always take a prospect who looks promising their development over a pick that may or may not turn into a player. Unfortunately I think that the "this pick upgrades if a player re-signs" thing was outlawed by the newest CBA, which sucks because I think that would work well here

Saad had more blocks and they were even in takeaways with Saad less giveaways. Kase isn't bad, but Saad is simply a better winger hands down. He'll also likely sign a new deal for $4.5M for 5 is my guess.

Based on what? He's not fragile and he's no more or less soft than the bulk of the roster. Pasta and Krejci are the same level of physical as Kase.

Based on what I saw in playoffs... skating circles around scrums, waiting for the puck to spit out, instead of going in and getting it himself.

His relative Corsi and expected goals against numbers over the last three seasons are much better than Saad's, his rates of takeaways and blocks per 60 minutes are actually noticeably higher than Saad's are and Kase's has over seven more expected defensive goals above replacement than Saad does, again over the last three seasons. I don't know how much of that can be attributed to the bad team around Saad and how much is on him, but most metrics point to Kase being superior for the time being. I've never watched a lot of Kase, so I can't say with certainty if he's better defensively or not, but the numbers definitely point to it being the case.

Saad is definitely better offensively -- he is really strong on the puck and creates a lot of high quality scoring opportunities. Kase does much the same actually, but not on the same level. I also think Saad has a higher ceiling offensively and maybe even defensively too. It's just been awhile since he's actually hit that ceiling.

Also, not sure where you are getting that it's been awhile since saad has hit that ceiling; he had a far superior takeaway to giveaway ratio and matching some of his best years. He was on pace for 30 goals had it not been for the stoppage of the season; his best was 31 goals in his career.

Kase is just not a 1st liner that will drive play and possession. Comparing one to the other, which I'd argue is a fool's errand, Saad is simply a better player hands down. Adding Kase would be nice, but in a middle 6 role, not a first line role and as such, would leaving a huge hole on the first line that Saad fills nicely.
