He grew a taste for it early on in his career because he started there, on his off hand, with Scandella on the 3rd pairing. After Christian Folin got moved he played with Spurgeon on the 2nd pairing and was on the right as well. Spurge plays both sides too.
Pairings looked like this.
Suter-Dumba
Spurgeon-Folin
Scandella-Brodin
Suter-Dumba
Spurgeon-Brodin
It wasn't until Dumba got moved down to play with Brodin and Spurgeon moved up to play with Suter because we couldn't afford to have Suter continue to babysit Dumba anymore, due to our need of having a true top pairing, that Brodin moved over to his natural position to accommodate Dumba.
Whenever Spurge and Brodin get paired together, they swap back to their off-hand. For whatever reason they just play better that way.
Spurgeon was attached to Scandella and then Suter's hip, and doesn't play on his offhand. Brodin/Spurgeon have about 20 games total as a d-pair and the play on their dominant side. He's also been a Staple in the top-4 since before any of Suter, Brodin, or Dumba was a player for the Wild.
Brodin:
-came into the NHL playing offhand as Suter's partner for about 3 years.
-Then he got paired with Scandella for a year as the shutdown pair (his 7p season), still on his offhand.
-He played his dominant hand the next year while paired with Folin to start the season (20 games) until Folin got hurt. Then When Folin was out it was a Brodin/Dumba or Scandella/Brodin depending on the situation.
-Has been primary paired with Dumba ever since. When Spurgeon gets injured (yearly), Dumba moved to the top-pair, and Brodin gets to play whack-a-mole for partners and which side of the ice he's on.
