He's more effective as a middle six LW. Also, only owed 1.725M in real money over the next two years (cc: Melnyk).

Not saying i agree with this, but i think Armstrong would value Dvorak more than Garland. Ability to play C, long term cost certainty. Armstrong won't want to cave and sign Garland long-term at a higher price point. For the Leafs, makes more sense within their window to sign Garland short term at a lower AAV. For Garland, also makes sense. try and inflate his numbers playing top 6 minutes and sign his big deal in 2-3 years time.

Very fair. More realistically, shave off a few 100k here or there to fit in Adam Brooks as the extra skater.

If you don't have players on LTIR all season you accrue cap space leading up to the deadline. GM tool doesn't account for that. Leafs would be able to fit Forsberg in.

Agree that the salary is what makes it tough. On the bright side for NJ, Nylander is only owed an average of 4.625M for the remaining 4 years of his contract (ironically, just above Palmieri's AAV). The fact the Nylander is only owed 4.625 should be enough for NJ to agree to retain 50% of Palmieri (and, that's only for one season). Leafs only make this trade if Rossi is available at 7 (which is very possible).

Shouldn't even have to explain this, but the assumption is they're not re-signing him to keep him. Simply as a means of recouping a draft pick. If they are not interested in that, they will let him go to UFA.

As for the Chicago trade, it’s trash, as are all trades between Chicago and Toronto that include Johnsson. It’s absolutely time to stop.</div></div>
Okay so call it a "sign and trade". Same result.

He won't get more than Pietrangelo (8-9M). Could easily trade off two of Johnsson, Kerfoot, even Nylander or Muzzin. You're getting a 27 year-old elite RHD. You make it work.

Why can't the Leafs and Blues do a sign and trade the day before Free Agency?

The Leafs will likely run with a 21-man roster at most times this season. Expect to see daily call ups/send downs to save space. Also note that I projected Marner on the higher end and he could very well come in 500k-1M below.

Yes, he would have to waive, which is a major hurdle. Ultimately the Leafs would have to make it clear that he will play 4th line minutes and/or be scratched if he stays. His choice.

You need to take into account the term. Johnsson may have turned down 2.5 over 3 years, but would he turn down 2.1 over 2? I doubt it. As for Marner, I expect the parties to be at an impasse and ultimately settle on a bridge. Kucherov got 9.5 on a long term deal so i imagine Marner would be amenable to 8.5 over 3 years and then get his big pay day on his next deal once the cap clears up.

Perhaps. But San Jose seems unlikely so at least this allows his family to move back to SJ while he plays close by and gets more minutes for a rebuilding team. When Marleau signed two years ago, apparently he was deciding between TOR, SJ and LA so this isn't far-fetched.

Making the salaries work
Before anyone comments on the high salary cap, know that the Big 3's salaries are all very liberal estimates (they will likely all come in at a lower number). Also, Zaitsev's modified NTC kicks in on July 1st, so the Leafs can do whatever it takes to trade him (ie package him with a first or solid prospect) if it would mean keeping the core together.

1) We will be promoting Sparks - may as well get something back from McElhinney; 2) Severson for Zaitsev may be a wash, but with a change of scenery, both players could improve. At the very least, we save around $400-$500k on cap space for a younger player with one year less term; and 3) you are trading for cheap controllable potential with Rasmus Andersson who is a puck-moving RHD, which we could use. Brown is expendable and will likely be playing 4th line minutes. Trade him while his value is high(er)
