I love how everyone was saying a 5+ mill contract was automatically worth a 1st for a cap dump

Rangers 2nd this year is the 32nd overall... look what other teams had to pay to dump massive contracts. Not really a “love how” situations lol. But you do you

First off it’s 2021 so draft order is obviously not set. And 2nd of all, if it was 2020 draft order goes back to by points in the 2nd round so it would have been somewhere around 45 or so. But yOu dO yOu...

I'd say in normal situations that's the case, but given that DET has actually need for both that pick and the player it isn't just a simple cap dump.

Also almost always the other team receives something in these kind of exchanges. Not this time...

Let's not sugarcoat it, this has nothing to do with Detroit actually wanting Staal. He can skate and we happen to need players basically everywhere, that's not the same thing. I think the biggest reason it's only a second instead of a first is because it's only one year. Any longer and I bet it's a first.

I disagree with the notion that DET doesn't want Staal. Their LHDs are probably the worst in the league. He's likely play a TOP4 role there.

    Agree with the rest there.

i wonder if staal waived his nmc because the wings are going to buy him out. i'll miss staal, he was a very good player for us for years. gorton made the right decision here. i'm shocked he was able to get a deal done. only giving up a 2nd for 5.7 off the books is a huge win.

it hasn't been said yet if the wings are going to buy out staal or staal agreed to play the season with the wings. still a lot of moving parts here. he had a nmc.

Oh I agree our defense is ass. Staal is an upgrade over guys like Ericcson and Daley, but that's not saying much.

Does this mean Detroit/Ottawa would take Eriksson with DipIetro + 2nd?

This seems to suggest he will not be bought out.

I think they might want a 1st since he's less useful, more term, $300K more.

staal is still a good penalty killer and was kinda our captain. he is a solid 3rd pairing dman at this stage of his career.

thanks for the source! i'm shocked he waived his nmc for us. i would have never thought he would. being bought out would have made him a lot more money and he would have been able to choice the team he played on. wings are good a great character player in staal.

Except it's a 1 year contract. They could have grabbed any number of LD's in free agency. They made the move for the 2nd.

100%. Unless these circumstances appear when you're getting an asset for free.

Yeah 2nd is the main asset. Staal is a somewhat useful addition.

This is true but know one doubted this everyone was saying a 1st at least to get rid of staal with one year left. We got it done for a 2nd in next years draft which is a much weaker draft. That being said makes a ton of sense for Detroit they get a second and a guy who can play on there left side and potentially flip him at the deadline
