San Jose probably declines. Imagine the Leafs trading for a winger with a 10M Qualifying Offer. LMAO

How does that change the fact that the minimum he can be paid in 3 years is 10M?

Yeah I was about to bring up the fact that you would be paying him 10M a season.

Not that I'm a fan of that trade, but I guess OP's point in this may be that " let's worry about qualifying offers in 3 years instead of right now.

The rest of the trades/signings are interesting.

If you want Timo (especially with retention) its gonna cost ALOT more than that package.

Nylander would be the main piece

I never said that. I said San Jose declines. They decline because he is a vital piece to their core moving forward. That doesnt make it a good trade for Toronto either

Because its very near sighted and ruins you for any long term plans.

Please understand: his QO offer in 3yrs is 10mil. But no one -- not the Sharks, not any other other team -- is likely to give him that. Therefore, he'll either 1) resign with SJ before hitting restricted free agency (or whichever team he's on if he likes it there and think they have a good chance to win) for 8mil for example, the exact amount depending on how he progresses, or 2) try his luck and become a UFA since SJ (or whichever team he's on) won't offer him 10mil, and he'll look for the highest bidder, which again won't likely be 10mil.

Moral of the story: you don't necessarily automatically lose Meier if your team doesn't give him 10mil. You just have to give him the higher range of his market value, which likely will be around 8mil.
