First off it's a lousy offer, And you honestly think that Bill Armstrong is retaining that much for 7 years on Ekman-Larsson. Deal needs to be far better then that.

Arizona easily declines that package.

The 1st is 2021, and the rest of the package is worthless.

Leafs retained that much on Kessel for that term. When you're clearly money and starting a rebuild, sometimes you have to

He wants a 1st and wants to get out of this contract. Look at it this way, that first will cost 8mil.

AZ is looking to get out of this contract, its not like VAN is banging on the door, they dont need to make this trade. They have NO LEVERAGE.

The offer is brutal though.

With the retention on OEL plus the money on the other players involved the difference in money is negligible. Add to that the fact the the pick is a year from now and it all boils down to a really bad offer.

Arizona may want to deal OEL... but they can do FAR better than this. This package is just down right terrible.

Easy no from AZ.

Leaf are financially sound and can afford to eat Kessel, Arizona isn't they're financially broke and can't afford to eat Ekman-Larssons salary.

If they want a good return for a guy that's had a weak 2 seasons and they're trying to rebuild, it's definitely an option. It's only 15%. They're not broke

He wants to shed his entire $8.25 mil cap hit, Yet you trade him Eriksson and with the $1,250,000 retention on OEL he's basically only saving $1 mil that's not enough. Arizona can't afford high salary like Eriksson he needs to be dealt elsewhere.

The only problem is that this isn't a good return, Nowhere close to a good return Eriksson has negative value and Juolevi hasn't proven a thing at the NHL level yet.

If AZ is in as bad financial shape as I think they are, they might well have to go this route: retain $8M + take back Eriksson's $5M ($13M total) + get a mid-1st in order to get out of the massive $54M obligation that is OEL. It saves them over $40M and they get a 1st... IMO that's probably all they can expect to get this offseason.

Of course he's going to ask for more right now, but as the summer wears on the ask will come down to something more realistic like this.

its only 5 mil in actual money. OEL is due 10.5mil in 2022! Dont confuse cap hit with actual money, rumors are owners are broke. Its a wash on cap hit for two years yes but for 5 years it frees them up to resign all their young guys down the road.

Math lesson:

$54M owed to OEL
-$8M retained
-$5M owed to Eriksson
= $41M saved by AZ

That's not bad for a company facing bankruptcy... and they get a 1st + B prospect in the deal too!

IMO it's not a terrible offer at all - it won't happen until after the 2020 draft though as AZ will hold out hope that they can get a 2020 pick from someone else.

He's trying to shed salary cap as well because Arizona is up against the cap. Like i said that trade does him no good.

That's what he's saying. In actuality he's trying to cut his cash spending because the company is facing bankruptcy. You don't 'squeeze under the cap' by trading your captain and best player, you only do that when you're trying to get out of paying his $54 salary.

Ummmmm.... yeah. I understand how the financials work. Thanks anyways.

It still doesn't change the fact that it is a terrible trade for Arizona and they could do so much better for OEL it is scary.
