What the Ek

Created by: MacanBayangan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 8, 2020
Published: Oct. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Biggest needs IMO are RHD and 3C/Bottom Six

Trades:

FLA - Going all out for Ekblad, FLA get replacement in Holl + Nylander (blue chip for blue chip). Also thrown in Liljegren and Rosen to further sweeten the deal.
MIN - Gone for a second 'Ek' as cheap/good 3C and Dumba because looks like they want to move him. In return they get Freddie as a starter, Kerfoot as replacement 3C and rights to dermott who is a capable D.
EDM - 3rd for competent back-up in Campbell and Johnsson, seems about fair but willing to downgrade to a 4th.
VGK - They need to move Fleury so in return for them retaining have given them a 2nd + Engvall (who they can flip if they want). Maybe this is still a bit light so willing to throw in more picks/prospects on the condition that the retain stays the same.

Signings:

Toffoli - cheaper replacement for Nylander
Maroon - Size + experience in the bottom six
Grant - Size + experience in the bottom six + 4C

Overall:
The forwards have been upgraded and have some added experience while keeping young average age. Defense has jumped up dramatically and is locked in for the foreseeable. Goalie is potentially a bit of risk but think Fleury still has a good couple of years left in him plus brings experience. Woll as back-up is risky but necessary for cap, Campbell was draining too much cap as a back-up and Fleury should start at least 65+ games.

Ready to get torn to shreds....what do you guys think....

I feel like Nylander and Holl can get the deal done alone, and Liljegren would be better suited for what Minnesota would want in return for Dumba in that Minnesota package.

Wild has no interest in that trade. Dermott (RFA) is a huge downgrade from Dumba and Kerfoot is a big downgrade from Ek. Andersen, who has just one year left and has been bad for the last few years, is not enough to compensate. You'll need to add a 1st round pick to that to get the trade talks rolling.

Edm would gladly provide some of their mid level assets like Jones & Lavoie in return for that package

Woll was truly awful in the AHL last year (.880) and with Fleury's age... why not keep Campbell ultimately?

Okay I here you. Tbh I'd probably do a 1st+Freddie and then trade Kerfoot+Dermott elsewhere, or can swap out Dermott and replace with Liljegren as per @tormundgiantsbane 's suggestion.

Debatable, but at least admit the packages are fair/verging on fair. Whether they do it or not is another matter.

I hear you on Woll but Campbell at 1.65 is too pricey IMO. Could try and get another back-up instead of Woll at around 1mil (Hank maybe!?!). As for returns, I'd rather someone take them for picks else it's just replacing a problem with another problem

You're entitled to your opinion, but it's easy to get bogged down with each individual trade. Yeah okay maybe some of it is overpayment but ultimately looking at the roster before vs after you've got to admit that it has been improved no? and I'd argue I haven't really given anything crucial away apart from Nylander and in return got Ekblad and Dumba. You've got to give something to get something surely.

I see what you did here and you’re thinking the right way but you should probably incorporate picks to balance deals. For bigger players think a young player and a high pick. Ekblad for Nylander deal doesn’t make too much sense unless they move on from Barkov. And as far as Ek, he’s oddly valuable and probably only moves if it’s part of a deal to get a true top line C.
