Arizona does not need Demko, they have Hill who is on a 1 way deal and NHL ready, they also have a very good goalie prospect after him too

Ekman-Larsson's cap hit, plus Adin Hill plus two ELCs instead of Baertschi and Eriksson: at most $11 million

Arizona's cap obligation under this deal: $11,916,666 plus Woo

Isn't the reason why the Coyotes are trading him supposed to be saving money on cap and payroll?

If you look at real dollars owed, Baertschi plus Eriksson is 3.4 million this year, followed by 4 million next year, then nothing.

OEL is 4 million this year, followed 10.5 million for each of the next three seasons after, then another 3 seasons over 5 million.

It’s not just about saving this year. It’s about saving every year down the road for Arizona. OEL’s trade value will never again be higher than it is right now.

This is a money saving move for them and brings in 3 valuable futures

I've seen this kind of muddled math before. Once the Baertschi and Eriksson contracts expire, you can't say "Well, this saves Arizona money because otherwise Arizona would be paying OEL" because at that point, Arizona still has OEL. It is true that Arizona would be saving $7 million over the next two years (only $600,000 this year) but then has five more years of OEL, who would still have a significant value for at least some of them.

The bottom line is that I don't think that Arizona is going to trade OEL in any deal that requires them to take back bad contracts. You can argue that they might trade him for Woo, Demko and next year's first, or maybe only one of the prospects plus the pick, but the Coyotes don't have to give OEL away AND take back garbage.

Then there is zero chance they move him. They have to take on money. And they have a history and well as are prime candidates to take on contracts in which the cap his exceeds actual dollars owed. The reason the want out of OEL's contract IS the term, so if a few short term headaches save them money long term, then that's the play. Otherwise, they won't be able to GIVE the player away. Nobody is in a position to take that kind of money without receiving money in return. In my opinion, including Demko makes it an overpayment. ARI should take this a run.

It will be literally impossible for Arizona to trade OEL and not take back cap and that's probably gonna have to include a bad contract or two, there's just no way a team can afford to add his cap hit without sending something back, if Arizona wants to move OEL they're gonna have to play ball or he isn't going anywhere and considering the way his contract is structured combined with his trade protection if they're not flexible in making a deal he won't be going anywhere.
