His defensive game is the difference in addition to being younger and cheaper. Think Bergeron or O'Reilly potential.
If you were to replace Simon with Mangiapane, transition Bennett to the LW of that wing and bump Dube up to that 3rd line and you have a lineup I'd put money on to win the Canadian division and potentially make it 3rd round or further. Still not Tampa, Avalanche, Vegas echelon but much much closer. Once Lucic, Ryan & Gio (plus Brouwer & Stone buyouts) come off the books, IF this team uses that cap space wisely, this team has the potential to be lethal and may even be able to convince Gaudreau to stay.
Unfortunately I don't see it happening. As "progressive" as the Flames front office is in some ways, they still are far too conservative to be trendsetters or ahead of the curve so don't hold your breath for anything that will enable the team to advance past the 1st/2nd round.

Then the deal just doesn't get done. The Flames won't trade Tkachuk or Valimaki. It's just that simple. And I can pretty much guarantee CBJ won't be getting a player of Tkatchuk's calibre back for PLD. Maybe that means they don't trade him but how many more superstar players are they going to keep letting walk to free agency and leave for nothing?

Should. But won't. The management and ownership group believes they are are within their "window to win." They aren't (not even kind of close) but that's besides the point. Trading for futures isn't something the Flames are interested in unless it involves freeing up cap space to acquire an upgrade in a corresponding move which is becoming increasingly unlikely given where most teams are in their various cap situations.

Well without magic beans mediocre begets mediocre and 60-70 point a season undersized wingers are pretty commonplace. That's usually second line maybe elite 3rd line production. Definitely not an untouchable franchise cornerstone.
That said, I agree nothing about this is particularly appealing. I would suggest the Flames could find a better combination of prospects & picks elsewhere and not have to retain salary. Even if it is next offseason, or at the trade deadline with any luck. Unfortunately I think we are stuck in the current hamster wheel of mediocrity for another season and the Flames lack self awareness & forethought so they are already past the point of being able to get a quality return for Gaudreau (or Monahan, Gio, Backlund or Ryan for that matter.) As such.... grab a beer & prepare for disappointment Flames fans.

Dont Trade a 99 Point Guy Shake Up Lines
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PhatRas</b></div><div>Did he get 99 points??</div></div>
I'm sure you've heard the saying :There are guys who score 20 goals a year (think Monahan) and guys who have scored 20 goals a year (remember Bouma or Colburne.) Gaudreau MAY score 99 points again (I will bet you a $1000 he doesn't) someday. But, barring an unlikely/improbable blockbuster that doesn't involve him, he won't do it again in CGY. In fact, I bet the Flames will be over the moon if he can come close to maintaining a point per game pace, which I also don't see happening without a drastic upgrade with his linemates. Don't misunderstand me, he is a really good player. It's not even 100% on him. He's limited by the potential, skillsets & playing style of his linemates. He's proven, repeatedly, he is not good enough to elevate his teammates, or even maintain his own level of play consistently when the games get more physical and time/space get taken away. There are about 10-15 players on the NHL who have the skills & IQ to help create space for him when the games get hard. None of those players play on CGY.
For what its worth, in my humble opinion, it is the same reason why Gio disappears in playoffs as well. The speed and intensity get ratcheted up vs regular season when teams pace themselves. and that 0.5 second completely takes away their ability to make plays with the same level of dependability or proficiency. They are regular season greats because they can make the most of every second and they can rely on the officiating to prevent taking too much of a physical toll. Playoffs are a different animal. To be completely honest it's my humble opinion this team is no where close to championship caliber so I say send Gaudreau to a team where he can slot in much like Kessel did in Pittsburgh, and Gio to a team where he can slot like McDonagh. Acquire prospects & draft picks to give the Flames an ability to do what they actually do well know, draft & develop to acquire a truly elite, gamebreaker like Hedman, Pietrangelo, Crosby/Malkin, Toews/Kane, McDavid, Eichel, etc. That is the only way they will ever be able to do so as teams don't trade players of that caliber often and they almost never hit FA at an age you don't cripple yourself cap wise to acquire.

I mean.... IF the Flames had a perennial 99 point guy, they probably should hold onto him. They don't. So the title doesn't make sense. And this team gets bounced in the first round again, if it makes playoffs at all.

Realistically: Debrusk, Studnicka and a 1st.
Personally I'd send you Gaudreau & Hanafin for Debrusk, Carlo, Studnicka and a 1st/2nd.

A one off eh? Considering there are organizations in the league who seriously doubt there WILL be a season next year, let alone what the future holds, I think your foresight is probably as limited, if not more so, as the millionaire & billionaire business owners out there that have no idea what impact COVID will continue to have. I see you're point, however to be honest, I have no idea how you can be so certain.
That aside, inter conference trades happen all the time... sure. But when was the last trades between these two clubs? I'd say it's even more rare than trades between EDM/VAN & CGY. You may be right. I'm definitely wrong all the time. I just think they find more natural fits, and accomplish the improvements you mentioned, in ways that are more consistent with what they are trying to achieve right now. Not too mention, considering the long term outlook of this club beyond 2 seasons from now, I don't think giving up 1st rounders is a particularly good idea. I love Ehlers, I just don't see it happening. It goes against everything both teams' GM's historical behavior.

Line slotting aside (semantics), I like the idea of acquiring Virtanen. I just don't see it happening at a cost that makes any sense. Even what you are paying is WAY too much. Giving up assets to help VAN (a division rival) to solve their cap struggles for them being counterintuitive enough, doing so to acquire a player whose work ethic has been questioned often and loudly by every coach and scout going back to junior seems like a bit ridiculous. If they wouldn't have qualified him and he came as a cheap ($1 mill 1 year prove it type contract) Free Agent... great. As it stands, I'd pass.

It's moot. Neither of these teams are trading significant, impactful players to a rival, especially one that will in all likelihood as well as widely speculated & reported to be in the same division next year. especially when each team has playoff aspirations, as ridiculous as that may be.

I don't see WPG trading a FA they just signed. I don't think it's ever been done has it??
I too hope they can offload Ryan. Love the player, hate that contract, especially considering where he slots in the lineup. At this point I am worried the Flames are stuck with hum though cause I doubt they are willing to sweeten the pot to deal him.
And as much as I would love to find a good home for Lucic, I don't see the Flames expending much needed draft capital (look at the long term outlook and contract situation of this team in 3 seasons aka when a decent 1st round pick will be ready for full time NHL minutes) to offload a that contract. There are better/cheaper ways to accomplish that goal next offseason, and even cheaper the season after. I predict they'll likely just ride it out and continue to preach what a good locker room presence he is and how much "taller" he makes his teammates feel on the ice. TBH barring an unforeseen blockbuster this summer (involving Gio, Monahan or Gaudreau), this season is pretty much a rerun of last season anyway. I like the creativity, but I don't think it's feasible. Especially for another LHD.

I'd have to agree with Ledge in this case. It doesn't successfully address any need nor achieve any objective. If you trade a player like Johnny, you want to either be obtaining you prospects with high upside, futures as well as gaining significant cap savings. Alternatively, he should/could be shipped to fill a glaring need or obtain a player with game breaking ability/impact. This seems to be halfway between both and just overall underwhelming. I love the idea of rolling with such a deep D group so good thinking there, but maybe it could be achieved in better ways.

Shouldve Committed to a Rebuild - But Since They Didnt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>How exactly does Dadonov "fit" better than Gaudreau? Gaudreau drives a line, Dadonov is a pure passenger to Huberdeau and Barkov.</div></div>
Lol you must be Gaudreau's agent/brother. At very least you are the president of his fan club. To take one small, largely inconsequential statement and use that as the basis of your argument shows how emotionally driven your stance is rather than one based in logic or fact. Do you want success for the team, or a team with your favorite player??
1) The underlying numbers/metrics indicate Dadonov was, for the majority of the time, an equal participant on that line that complimented his line mates well. So that's a lazy, cherry picked, shortsighted argument. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, he isn't a defensive liability that needs to be sheltered or offset by his line mates. BOS has players more capable of doing that than CGY does.
2) Your assertion that Gaudreau "drives the play" is somewhat accurate but largely incomplete. He requires the right players to compliment his perimeter playmaking ability, preferably a player who can "make room" or "create space" for him, either through physical play (his flashes of success with Ferland) or their creativity (Hudler or, until he became predictable as a result of having to carry the burden of defensive responsibility Lindholm). The Flames as currently constructed (and as the inmates seem to run the asylum re: who he wants to play with) don't have those players, or have the right mix of players to lend themselves to that style.

True. Misunderstood what you were alluding to. I could see it working both ways. I also think with middle 6 FWD's feeling the pinch, a little security and coming closer to home, a little term he may accept less. I took the average of his closest comparable(s) and inflated it a bit to get a bit more term. Same with Mangiapane.

That Boston trade is not good for Calgary
Hanifin = Carlo
Gaudreau >> DeBrusk + 2nd
Dadonov is not going to sign that, he will resign in Florida for that deal long before Calgary</div></div>
Dadanov MAY sign for more but I seriously doubt it. They have had an internal budget forever, and COVID likely hasn't helped that. If He were likely resign for more there, it likely would've been done. And there are what, 3-5 teams in the league with the cap space to sign him and 2 are looking for RWs and willing to pay that.
Two years of Gaudreau (who is unlikely to reach 99 pts ever again with this team) isn't going to garner the type of return you would consider a "win" He also doesn't fit in CGY. So think of it like this;
Hanfin = Carlo
Gaudreau < Cap space for a Top 6 FA RW who DOES fit, Debrusk & a 2nd.
There are literally 2 MAYBE 3 potential spaces that have the space & desire to bring in a player like Gaudreau. If they are serious about winning and revamping the top 6, they need to use him to garner better quality depth, not try to win the trade straight up. Gaudreau fits with Bostons structure, development curve and playing style. Maybe see if they will include a prospect like Studnika or Senyshyn but in this economic climate; seems unlikely)
Maybe the trade isn't a win, but the team is clearly better.

It's definitely probable/possible is the route we see as Treliving likely won't see a return he likes for a member of the "core" to truly shake things up. Unfortunately this would lead to another first round exit and drafting 15-20th again next year.
