not really

at this point, the leafs' hole is the #4 RD. Not trading Nylander for that guy, maybe a #1 or #2, but we already have muzz, brodie, and rielly. We'd just need a solid RD who isn't terrible

traded for what lmao

marner is a generational playmaker who's prob gonna go down as our MVP in years to come, management is NOT trading him

nylander, management inquired about it but the return was laughable because nylander is underrated as hell

you don't trade players like that and expect to get better

if we were rebuilding that would be a solid package, but the leafs get worse in this trade and they are in win now mode, and idk anybody who would fit the mold of defensive RD on NYR who's more of a second pair guy, that would be worth nylander imo

Why do you want him anyway? Thats not the position you need and youll have to clear a lot of cap. You guys already have a ton of offense.

He's actually played C. Keefe used him as one in the A and he played there in Sweden I believe.

he's more of the same mold as rielly/sandin/dermott, kind of a more offensive guy, big powerplay dude, not really a penalty killer or a defensive d

still a great player, but his term would also concern me

As The Athletic posted a article interviewing the top scouts in the league when asked who is most likely to get traded and they were both rated the highest on the list. Toronto isn't going anywhere with the money committed to JT, Matthews, Marner and Nylander all in the forward group.

I hear it but youre trade is wrong then. And once youre making a big deal go out and get a proven nhl center. And deal strome instead of buch not the same value but you need buch because none of youre three left wings could play the right side.

not with that contract lol, if he was cheaper he'd be solid for the leafs, but 8m is insane

having that money committed to those players ensures you don't need to have money committed to garbage depth forwards. The Athletic had toronto ranked 5th in their contract efficiency, that's why they paid those players.

also, I don't really care what scouts have to say, I remember people making the case for trading Matthews a few years ago. There's always rumblings but like, you don't trade nylander and get better, nor marner. It's hard to think of a dman they could realistically acquire via trade that would improve the team over the gaping black hole that would surface from losing one of those two

just looked, one of the quotes provided for trading them: “I’d say Mitch Marner. They shouldn’t have signed John Tavares. His skating is declining every year. They should have just focused on the two younger kids and used the money elsewhere. I know it’s great to have the two centers … but you can’t have three players making over $10 million.”

which is hilarious considering tavares being acquired saved them overpaying JVR/Bozak or other 3rd/4th line players (the scoring had to come from somewhere). He's also not declining at all, he's still a top 15 centre lol. Like, idk some of these scouts have some bonkers opinions, I don't really put much stock in them

They said the problem is JT, and he should be the star most likely to be trade but that contract isn't tradable as his skating is declining fast. That leaves Marner or Nylander were the comments from the pros and were those are the "stars players in the league" most likely to be traded. I'll go with what the pros say versus fans on CF personally. That said, maybe Toronto want to flounder around in the first round of the playoffs for the next few years too...hard to say.

tavares is 10th in goals since he joined the team, 4th at 5v5. 22nd in point totals, 15th at 5v5. His skating is "declining fast" yet he's literally playing the best hockey of his entire career. Even this year, with personal problems, injuries etc. he scored on pace for 34 goals and 44 assists, 78 points in 82 games, which is right around or slightly exceeding his career average.

I really have no idea what they are talking about when they say he's declining. He was 29, just turned 30.

Also, I still would love to know who the leafs are trading nylander or marner for. Any team that takes them wouldn't give up enough to make up the hole those guys would leave. The leafs would trade nylander, have a solid dman and be so crippled in their scoring along the wings and constantly be on the search for a star winger (i.e. edmonton)

Dubas acquired Muzzin, Brodie, and Barrie for nothing more than spare parts and a third line centre. Why are we suddenly trading one of our core, franchise pieces for a top 4 defenceman?

You clearly don't get hockey if you think having 4 "stars" in forwards in only 1 on defense and a questionable goaltender is going to win playoff games. Defense and goaltending wins playoff games, not 4 highly paid stars on offense. Leafs have been one of the most loaded teams with scoring and points in the regular season the last 4 seasons yet get bounced out of the first round every year...actually, they didn't even make the first round this year. That said, the Leafs front office is smart, dynamic offenses are fun to watch, sell tickets and merchandise...screw getting a cup!

Big reason why the Rangers took Braden Schneider. The team that needed Hendrix Lapierre the most.
