A lot of leafs fans are way too polar on Brodie. Simply put, he is the clear best full time D partner Rielly has ever had (will have soon at least). However he is not perfect, there will be times where he messes up but thats because he plays a very high risk style game.

nobody's perfect, but the facts the leafs have a guy on the right side who can:
1. walk the blue line and be some semblance of an offensive threat
2. pass the puck in the breakout and do something other than "off the boards and out"
3. not be an absolutely positional liability in their own end at 5v5
and 4. kill penalties reasonably effectively - that's a huge win for us lol

and he was free

Don't get me wrong, I 100% agree. If tickets open up this year Ill be attending going to the Scotiabank Arena to see him play a couple times (since I rarely got to see him prior). Like I said he is great for Reilly, but dont overrate him either.

I honestly don't know why Brodie bothered. He's gonna get run out of town the first time he sees McDavid and trips over the blue line. This is just round 3 of the same movie. Gardiner was part 1, Barrie was part 2, Brodie is part 3. Brodie needed a Gio and Rielly is not a Gio and he's proven this before. Really good don't get me wrong, but functionally different. I actually think Barrie will succeed in Edmonton though. He can play his offside with Larsson who can cover his defensive mistakes, quarterback the league's best power play and I don't think playing his offside will affect him. Offensive guys usually don't have a problem with the transition as they can see more ice, hit one-timers and can get to the high slot easier. They don't play defence so they don't struggle any more there

Brodie is nothing like Jake the Snake. The best comment I saw in here was someone saying Carlyle and Babcock misused Gardiner. They did. He was a 5/6 d man to quarterback the power play. That is it. And the giveaway stats... it wasn’t so much the amount of giveaways as that is a poor stat for any player (especially d-men), it was the quality of the giveaways. He had many many BAD turnovers. Neutral zone. In front of own net. Offensive end. That’s why we are all hard on Gardiner. But the leafs coaches always seemed to want him to be more than what he was.

Brodie will be fine. He’s not the stud right handed big bodied #1 d man you’ve all be calling for. But he is certainly an upgrade from Garinder, Ceci, Barrie, Zaitsev, Oziganov, and Hainsey (although I thought Hainsey was solid).

Leafs defence will be fine if the Forwards learn to play a 2 way game as well.

If you're expecting Bogosian to play top-4 every night I expect its him that'll become the whipping boy, not Brodie.

like, they aren't even really similar players. Gardiner is a powerplay quarterback, Brodie is a 5v5 competant 2 way defender

gardiner is a drunk player haha

Giveways stats mean nothing. Players that are given the responsibility of handling the puck, have the most giveaways . Usually the best Dmen have the most.
