Tampa is going to lose someone for cheap No way around it

Created by: MGabes19
Team: 2020-21 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 15, 2020
Published: Dec. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Before Tampa fans freak out: I have yet to see someone find a good solution for their cap issues. This is a reasonable deal (freeing up 2.7M) for a team that is absolutely screwed due to flap cap.

Flyers fans also need to understand Ghost has almost no value, so the Flyers may get even less than what I've proposed.

This gives us enough space to call up Patty if/when he's healthy. I see him playing limited 4th line role when he first gets back, but we will see. Head injuries suck.

Just take a look at the long term outlook of that Johnson buyout.......

Philly is not the partner that should take on Johnson for Tampa

Also this still isn’t great for Tampa because they need about 10+ mil cap relief where here they only gain 2.7 and lose a much needed top 4 defender. They’d also probably decline.

You cant buyout Johnson. So you'd be over the cap.

Also, Tampa doesn't wanna trade Foote. But they'd trade him before trading Cernak.

Kings decline, Ghost is not the veteran presence of solid defensive play they want paired with their prospects. Send him to a team with a great stay at home to play him with and he will explode.

True, not ideal for the long term, but they gain a good, young D man. I worry that he would get plucked by Seattle the following summer though.

What would you do to clear up their cap situation?

If he waives NTC to go to Philly, he can be bought out, no?

I'd be OK with Foote though....

TBH, I just threw him on a random team lol. We may get a 5th rounder for him from whoever is willing to take the risk. Doesn't have to be LAK.

    I don't think that's a thing that can happen.

Ive posted similar a few times, adding a couple of mid level prospects, like Isaac Ratcliffe and LD Linus Hogberg.

Although I wouldn't put Johnson in minors, the Flyers need some speed, so I'd put Johnson at 3C, Patrick at 4C, and Frost needs key offensive time, so I put him at 1RW, moving voracek to 3RW and farabee to 3LW, JVR to 4LW.

Once Cernak signs he'll be in the Laughton neighbourhood, so taking Johnson is saving them 5mil in cap, but they still need to move a killorn or gourde (5mil or so).
Does Philly want Johnson at 5mil for 4 years? Probably not, but they need speed and that's the price for a 23 yr old RD in Cernak.

Im a fan of this deal and think that Johnson might waive his NTC to go to a contender, rather than a rebuilding club. And while TB shouldn't be looking to move a cheapish, young RD they'll have to make some moves soon with less than a month until the season starts. And they're not plumb with tons of prospects and teams don't want picks if theyre in a win now as enticements to take salaries and the players they want to move have NTC, which means they probably wont want a rebuilding club. (TB is presently 2mil over cap without cirelli and cernak signed).

Yeah, I have the Flyers buying him out, only because of flat cap issues. But I agree that he is still a serviceable player, maybe they take that route after a year or so. If that's the case, they are going to have to shed more cap. Not sure how they would go about doing that. What do you think?

I work a deal with seattle to take Johnson or JVR and then trade the other for whatever.

Philly is plumb with close to ready prospects and have enough expiring UFAs (Raffl, Elliot, Gus, laughton: 8.6mil) to re-sign their only RFAs Sanheim and Hart (presently 4mil) next year so taking Johnson isn't a huge issue. In 3 yrs when Giroux, coots, and others are UFAs, then its a problem.

Problem you got is a bunch of your contracts are harder to move than Tampa's. You're trying to take advantage of Tampa's cap situation by putting yourself in Tampa's cap situation. Tampa and Philly aren't dance partners this year. In a flat cap world you have to pay to move guys with cap hits. If it costs Cernak to trade Johnson it's going to cost to move Ghost.

Well that's a challenge during a cap crunch and not too many teams would take three years for that risk. Maybe retain or give up a higher pick.

The Ghost and his 4.5m X 3 just might be untradable. There are cheaper UFAs still on the market.
Johnson and his 5m X 4 years still might be too hard to swallow for any team despite sweeteners.
Killorn, Cirilli and Sergachev are the my favourites to be traded by Tampa.
