Hate the bottom six

Created by: Theozler
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2020
Published: Dec. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I can’t think of a way to fix this without dealing nylander or marner, but I do not like the forward depth. New team I feel can actually roll four lines effectively and survive an injury.

Hard to say, I could be wrong but I think the issue is him vs coaching/management

I agree in the sense he should be a team player but we also don’t know what led up to all this. For all we know they vocally promised a c or a role then said too bad.

No chance Winnipeg adds a first when they are getting stuck with Marner's contact and a player that doesn't fill a need.

Exactly this. Plus the Leafs have pretty good goal scoring depth in Matthews and Tavares, Nylander and Hyman (mostly empty netters!). No reason to trade their best play maker in Marner for another goal-scorer in Laine, who aside from having a poor attitude, he's really inconsistent. Trading Marner for Laine does nothing to fix the bottom 6 either. Although I'm not convinced it's looking that bad at all.

Ina year they’d pay laine maybe 1.5 million less, he’s a 9 million player, I agree contract isn’t great but end of the day it’s not an albatross. My biggest complaint is at that aav it should’ve been 8 years.

Frees cap space to add to depth.

Despite Marner's huge contract, he's still definitely talented. I would argue that the need he would be filling is increasing the talent on their team. Marner > Laine in my opinion.

Yup. Marner has a horrific contract. Winnipeg wouldn't want to get mixed up with it. If the Jets move Laine it's to fill holes, not get more expensive and not any better.

Yes, Marner is better, but he's not 2 or 3 mil on a bad term better.

Matter of opinion. Plus you never know how new players will gel. There's clearly chemistry between Marner and Matthews already and Marner can kill penalties as well. Again, just my opinion but I'd prefer to pay him what he's signed and there's no rush to move him out.

Bro are you crazy the bottom six is UNREAL they have a guy who just led the league in assists for 3 straight years, a youngster who just scored 40 points and got Selke votes in Simmonds and Spezza scores a point per game like clockwork I mean what more can you-

oh... wait... it's not 2010?

You might be right, but if Im the jets i dont make this deal right now and I dont add a 1st on top of it.
Jets should hold onto Laine, hope he lights it up this year and then either sign him to what he's worth or, if he still wants to leave, deal him. There was that report of Seattle having interest in a trade. Im sure they could make a hell of a package after the expansion

I agree. There is very little chance Marner and Laine are exchanged for each other. It's a bit misleading about killing penalties though. Everyone knows that defensive ability isn't the reason Marner is on PK once in a while.

Marner lead the leafs in SH ice time per game last year. He didn't just play that role once in a while, he was a consistent penalty killer and it's because he has defensive ability.

Laine averaged exactly zero minutes per game of penalty killing.

And marner does which is great but you don’t want scoring stars constantly killing penalties as it increases chance of injury. Ideally you have guys that do it for them. I’d rather marner focusing on 100 points and 5 on 5 defensive play.

I mean, the risk of injury goes up the more ice time you get. So in a sense I see what you mean, but like wouldn't you also rather the Leafs ice the best possible penalty killers? Marner seems never to be tired so I don't think it's hurting his offensive numbers. I think his experience on the PK also helps him continue to get better defensively in 5on5 play as well.

I mean more in the sense that you’re more likely to block shots off your foot or hand. Yes risks are low but I’d rather my bottom six guys do that/play through those injury than my star who needs his hands in top condition
