Options for next year HALL and HAMILTON

Created by: CD282
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 29, 2020
Published: Dec. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Even with a flat cap, Edmonton has money to spend next summer. Who should they take a run at - Taylor Hall or Dougie Hamilton? Or someone else? They'll have $8.778M in cap space if Klefbom comes back and $12.945M if he doesn't (with a 22-man roster). Buying out James Neal brings the cap space to $16.778M with a 21-man roster - Edmonton could take a serious run at BOTH marquee free agents! But, should they? There are many more good UFA's coming to market in 2022.

It doesn't always work out like that.

This is EXACTLY the same pushback everyone got for signing Alex Pietrangelo to their AGM's last summer - and look what happened. It's incredible how short our memories are and how foolish we are to think that players will do what we think they should do.

I never posted Petro trade-and-extensions for a reason. St. Louis IMO wanted to own-rental Petro. They were hoping to hammer out an extension until the very end, but they also knew that if he got too expensive, they had another target in mind in UFA (i.e. Krug). Cap space has its own value for teams that are favorable destinations. Carolina's becoming a more intriguing UFA destination for many guys, but it isn't quite there with the cup champion of 2 years ago just yet.

Goaltending and D are a bigger concern of mine. Would like to have a better D than Barrie, guy is a nightmare, but does bring offense. If I am spending on what he will probably want, I want better in own zone. And goalie, we need a better backup or 40 game guy, money better spent.

Yeah, but there's TONS of money available - over $12M even if Klefbom is back. And Barrie has been a decent 2nd pairing guy all his life except for last year when he was given easier comp. And other than the 1.5 months he played under Babcock, he killed those minutes. As I said, no decision needs to be made until July, and we'll know a lot more then, but right now I'd lean towards Barrie at $5M short-term over Hamilton at $8M long-term.

Why would Carolina not bring Hamilton back for less than 9 mil? They're a better team than Edmonton, with a better climate, a better tax haven, and the only place he's ever escaped criticism in his career.

Their not better then EDM though

If Hall will take a 7M x 5 or 6 years then I am all over that deal. As far as Hamilton goes, he will want 9M and I am not willing to pay that. If I am going to pay 9M then I wait and go hard after Seth Jones, if that fails then I offer Parayko 6x6.5

Undoing the Chiarelli years would make this team one of the best ever.

Maybe not best ever, but ya, it would be on par with tampa if not better.
