Rangers can't afford this due to their 5m in bonus payments. Columbus really wants to contend, not trading two key pieces for futures.

By this post, the Rangers are very near the cap. Bonus payments are expected to be 5m this season. So the overage in salary and bonuses this season, is taken off the available cap in 21/22.

What? The only bonuses that act that way are for entry level deals, and one year contracts for players over 35, or one year contracts for players that missed basically a whole season.
The only player with performance bonuses in their contract is kakko.

Johnson should be alright as a third pair D-man. He's a good penalty killer, a veteran presence, signed to a one year low cost contact, could easily be sent to the taxi squad if a rookie D-man out plays him at some point and easily sent to AHL if he's as horrid as you think he is. Also his former D-coach is now the Rangers D-coach.

Yea no thanks on that price. If its Kakko its basically Kakko & Strome for PLD. CBJ is dealing from a position of weakness, and that return shrinks even more this offseason when both Eichel and PLD want out. And no team is offering a better package than Kakko and Strome for PLD. So why would the Rangers add more?

To be league compliant, on day 1 at least, teams are allowed (7.5%) 6.11m over cap. Anything over that is needed in cap space, here 8.56-6.11= 2.45m cap space needed, have 0.74m == short 1.71m to start.
We will need 7m ish by seasons end for actual bonuses, in this scenario with no Kakko 5.5m ish == short 5m ish.

That’s only need room (and they don’t really need room) for players with entry level deals IF they hit their bonuses. You should look up what the bonuses are. They are near impossible to hit. Some aren’t that tough. 20 goals, 60 points and stuff like that. Some are like win the all star MVP and whatnot.
