Adding over $1m in cap for a 3rd pair d-man, another LHD to boot. Unless Cole hits waivers tomorrow it's a dumb move my Guerin, who doesn't seem to understand how the salary cap works at all.
The team's problems are at center, not the d-corps.
If there was a deal to be made for a center, I'm sure Guerin would have made it. Doesn't mean he shouldn't improve the team where he can and if nothing else, I'd guess Cole would be easier to flip at the deadline given his experience on 2 Cup winning teams.
You are underestimating how good a healthy Greg Pateryn is
Then I guess we haven't seen that in years because he's been nothing but a 6th D on Minnesota who quickly gets exposed when forced to play up in their lineup. Cole isn't much better, but he is definitely better.

Maybe not look at stats where both players had outlier seasons. Pateryn had a bad injury riddled season, while Cole just had a career best season. I know its a 3 year scale, but ignoring this year will help show how good they really are.
Look at his 16-19 stats, Pateryn was an elite defensive defenseman

I presume COL needs cap space and wants to play Byram. That's the only justification for this trade; MIN got the better player, far and away.
Adding to this: considering the difference in player quality, COL should've pushed for an additional pick or prospect. They did get exactly what they wanted, but there was some opportunity cost here.
