The Rangers can buy him out for 1/3 of his contract. No reason for them to retain 1/2 his contract

You would be paying a 4th round pick to remove $2.4 million from your books.
For a team that has been making daily transactions to keep under cap, that is a good swap.

They cannot. There are no buyouts in middle of season. That can only be done in short window during off-season, but that is only a factor for 2021-22 (and 2022-23 if buyout option is used). His 2020-21 salary cannot change unless he is traded (or terminated, but they already passed on that option).

Then you can keep him. A 4th isn’t enticing enough either. You gotta detach yourself from your 1st round pick because if ADA is traded, it won’t be yours

I'd think Gorton's job security at this point has him thinking more about improving the team this season. Swallowing $4.8 million cap hit to prove a point may be pretty low on their list.

Oh forsure, but like a user said, it would be better for NYR to just buy him out rather than retain all that

penguins too deep on the RD side to take him without sending a bad contract out.

Letang, Marino, and Maniscalco looking like a freaking stud in WB.

Unless they are worried about the extra 883k on the cap when they are trying to re-sign Zibanejad, Fox, Kakko.
Salary retention would only be for next season.

Cap isnt much of an issue right now.. as he's already on the team and they are under the cap

They have been managing the cap daily...guys on and off taxi squad to save a few thousand here, a few thousand there. So, I think cap is very much an issue.

They cannot buy him out mid-season. That was never an option. Only can do that in off-season.

    Their options were
    (1) keep him on roster
    (2) demote him now that he has cleared waivers
    (3) trade him
    (4) terminate his contract

The team has said that option (1) is out "He played his last days as a Ranger" (theoretically, they could keep him on roster and scratch him every night for whole season, but that is an everybody-loses type option). Option (4) is out since they passed him through regular waivers, not unconditional waivers. So that leaves options (2) and (3). He goes to AHL/Taxi Squad or he gets dealt. If they send him to AHL and he doesn't report, they could then put him on unconditional waivers and terminate him.

I know they can’t buy him out mid season. They’d have to wait for the summer. I think #2 is most likely tbh

who is saying anything about buying him out during season? That's irrelevant. And they dont need to buy him out mid-season. Yet you keep posting that.

Many NYR fans keep saying that NYR shouldn’t retain or give up assets when they can just buy him out. They can’t. They are either paying him or trading him.

Every team is in the same position for cap except the 5 Ish teams that have room. We have no reason to trade deangelo unless we get a pick back and let’s say we retain salary. They buyout is so low that we’d just buy him out in offseason and making a trade unless it’s like a swap for Bennett won’t have an affect on our team at this point

Every rangers fan is referring to after the season buyout and if the do trade and retain salary (which might likely happen) they’ll be getting back a pick prob around a 4th ish

He's already been moved to the Taxi Squad, well on paper, as he's been sent home.
So NYR save another 1.075 M toward the Cap for this season if he just stays home. (3.725 prorated cap hit for rest of 21/22)
So eating 50% for a non asset, gets them, what ...an additional 1.325 this season & costs them 2.4 next? His buyout numbers , which yes, we are aware are not in season but after the season in a specific window, of 384K & 884K seem very manageable.
NYR Cap issues were essentially tied to potential performance bonuses, & that number is decreasing , down to to approx 1.3 from 4.95, so ( as of today) they could have 5 million in cap money as a surplus, yes that could change, increase, but its manageable with the roster moves as it stands now.
Gorton isn't looking to do TD any favors, nor do i think he wants to trade him within the division. TD is not going to Hartford, JG has basically said as much.

We are talking about now. The alternative to trading him is keeping him. The alternative to trading him for 2021-22 is buying him out (or keeping him for another season).

Puzzling to me why this is so difficult.
