Depth charts are not created equal. What you have used him as is irrelevant. To be a true 1 you have to contribute in both ends.

You’re comparing apples to oranges with the Malkin comparison. A top pairing D doesn’t have to be an offensive stud. He’s one of the better shutdown defensemen in the league. I mean if you go by your standards then a lot of teams don’t have a single 1st pair defenseman lol. What you’re describing is an elite defenseman. You don’t have to be elite to be a competent 1st pair defenseman.

Correct, some teams don’t. Some have more than two. There are 62 1st pair jobs in the NHL. But there are not 62 1st pair caliber d men in the league. 🤷🏻‍♂️

TSN did a great job showing the Canadian teams depth charts before the season with an actual line/pair ability slotting shown. Wish they had done it with the American based teams too. Was quite accurate.

For example had they done it for Boston the second line would have listed:

Debrusk-Krejci-Kase. But their ability slot would have listed 3-2-3.

There were teams that did not have a true 1st pair d man or C etc. there were some that were playing on line below their ability.
