Ownership tells Burke and Hextall to go all in for one year

Created by: Chigurrhh
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 16, 2021
Published: Feb. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Basically, screw it and go for it this year and deal with the consequences later.

Buffalo gets a LD that they can give hard minutes to to free up Riso and Dahlin+pick. That's the basic idea. Maybe throw in one of the goalie prospects or Legare too.

Montreal is clearly a playoff team but Danault likely isn't in their future plan (and his role is diminishing which lowers his value). This trade replaces him with a young LW who projects to be ready next year to play in a middle six role.

Depends on how much Buffalo wants to win soon. Dumoulin has been an effective top pairing guy for most of his career, including as the best defenseman on a cup team (2017) and is signed for another two seasons.

He's been in trade rumors for a several months now and has a significantly diminished role this year with two young Cs on the team. Would be far from the first time a team does something like this. The Blues have done it a few times. Traded Shattenkirk at the deadline when they were a playoff team, for example.

He literally out and said he was not happy with playing a defense-only role behind the two other guys.

Article

"Canadiens' Phillip Danault not interested in defence-only role, he says

With emergence of Nick Suzuki and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Danault, who has one year left on his contract, faces uncertain future in Montreal."

He turned down a contract offer and complained about his role. Obviously, a bunch of trade speculation and rumors followed.

What makes u think that Dumoulin helps us “win soon” though?
I like him fine as a player, but defense isn’t our issue
Scoring & (especially) goaltending is

Dumoulin has driven offense pretty well for most of his career.

Not “offense”
“Scoring”
Not the same thing

And his career high in goals is 5, and points is 23
So even saying he helps provide much offensively isn’t all that true
Idgaf about Corsi related analytics either. They’re mostly bs

We need another “sniper” and we need a (good) goalie

He's very good at getting the puck out of the zone, making passes in transition, and keeping the puck in the offensive zone. These things increase scoring chances for the other players on the ice. He's actually been a better driver of offense than defense in his career. Point totals don't tell the whole story. People who rely simply on those are intentionally ignoring useful information.

Nah, your opinion is mostly bs.

As a Sabres fan, you should probably understand that focusing only on the result of goals and not the process of generating them results in stupid teams giving 9 million a year to players like Jeff Skinner.

"But he's a 40-goal scorer! We have to sign him"

Some Sabres think Hall is getting way more than you offered and not have to retain also. IMO there aren't going to that many offers for Hall. So your offers in the ballpark.
But I would give Sabres Poulin...a true future and a second, and make the Montreal trade Denault for Dumoulin. As suggested Habs don't want to weaken their team during a Cup run an Dumoulin could be just what the Habs need.

More for danault but tbh the hall trade could work for Buffalo if he doesn’t wanna resign which is probably the point we’re at

Yeah, that's why I suggested the possibility of throwing in additional prospects. Penguins took two goalies relatively high last year, which Buffalo could be interested in.

I agree that about your point with Hall. Not many teams with cap space or contenders willing to part way with roster players. Look at Colorado's roster for example, who would they send back to match the salary? They already have Saad as basically a rental.

Your point about Dumoulin to Montreal is interesting. He would most likely be their top LD and push a guy like Edmundson out of the lineup, making them better. On the other hand, they already have a bit of a logjam at that position, which has pushed Kulak and Mete out of the lineup at times.

If they are interested at that upgrade (and make a corresponding move to trade one of the other LD), I think your counterproposal makes a lot of sense.

He didn’t said I’m not happy, he said he doesn’t want to play a defensive role only. He said I don’t care if I play 3C, I just want to keep bringing offense, not defensive mission only.
