How many Stanley Cups would the Oilers have won if Gretzky was not traded?

If the answer is 0 or 1, then trading Gretzky was the right thing to do because the Oilers won the Cup 2 years after the trade was made.

An NHL team's only purpose is to win the Stanley Cup and deliver profit to its shareholders.

One can argue they did just that when they traded Gretzky :/

Not just Gretzky but Messier, Coffey, Anderson, Fuhr, Lowe, Tikkanen, Kurri, etc. I believe that Oilers team would've won at least 2 more Cups and maybe 3. The 1994 cup champion Rangers had 7 former Oilers on that team.

If they kept the whole band together .. probably at least a few more.. I wasn't born yet so I have no idea what the other competitive teams looked like but I would imagine at least a few more.

I mean they won number 5 without him so stands to reason a couple more I guess. Would have been nice to see them stay togrther a couple more years and meet 66 and the penguins in the early 90s

I watched an interview with Gretzky a few years ago and he said that he thought that the oilers probably would of won 7-8 cups if they could of kept the team together
