Bye bye Kosko - Realistic-ish offseason

Created by: Eddster37
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 13, 2021
Published: Mar. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ideally, Neal isn't on the team, whether it's at 50% retained, or trading a pick to rid of his contract...

Also ideally Krussell isn't on the team either, but again, just something I think will happen.

- Hoffman is the sniper they need for McDavid
- Iafallo is underrated and kills penalties, good 2 way player
- Barrie re-signs I think
- Getzlaf is a bit of a pipe dream, but exactly what the Oilers need...
- Driedger won't re-sign in Florida I don't think, and Oilers can pay him Koskinen's money. 2 years as a "show me" deal. If he sucks, then it's still a probably tradeable contract.

Marody and Benson need to clear waivers next year, and the way they're chugging at the AHL level, it's time for them.

I'm currently watching the Condors game, that Benson - McLeod - Marody line has some insane chemistry. Also starting to think we might make room for them on the 4th line next year

Is Dreidger really worth a 5M contract though? Cuz thats what your really paying him essentially with the Koskinen buyout on top of his cap.

They're a scoring line though, you can't expect them to succeed on the 4th line when they're utilized as Top 6 F's in the minors.

Is playing a bottom six role in the nhl going to suddenly undo all the chemistry they have developed together? Of course they won’t score at the same pace but having a depth line that can generate offence isn’t exactly unheard of.

I don't think your logic makes a lot of sense. Many top 6 AHLers spend time developing tools that will make them successful in the NHL's bottom 6. All those guys have spent time killing penalties this season. The Oilers organization is developing the defensive side of their games to get them ready for the bottom 6. Not sure what the other alternative would be. Throw them directly onto the first line in the NHL?

Exactly, they are actually learning the NHL game down there. That development just started a couple years ago and is for the best. They will be able to step right in.

Tomas Nosek was a really good scorer in Grand Rapids with the Detroit farm team. He was consistent every night, never checked, never got dirty. Now in Vegas, he's a 4th line PK guy that throws the body constantly. It's going to be interesting to see how Benson and co. can transform their game in a similar fashion. It's not easy. Many failed. Tomas Jurco, Brandon Pirri, Nicklas Jensen (The RW, not WSH D Man). I doubt EDM relies on all 3 to come in and make an impact at once.

Obviously there is a chance they all make it, but from what I've seen from Marody, the guy is a career AHL player. He doesn't really excel at anything in particular. Seems like a really blank player.

Benson has the hockey sense to make it, but year after year, zero improvement on his skating.

McLeod will be our 3C next season. I just have a feeling. He looked great two summers ago and he plays really really hard. I really like his game

One of the biggest question marks for the Oilers this year and years past was goaltending. I can't look at that tandem and feel anymore confident than I did to start this season. Dreidger has had a really nice run here, but the guys played less than 30 NHL games. Running with him and our current 3rd stringer isn't exactly settling

I probably got a bit too hyped about that line. You make some good points. Although I honestly would rather any of the 3 play over Neal. As a 12/13th forward either of the 3 would do. Next season will be interesting once they've developed even more. Marody and Benson have limited upside who knows if they stick around agreed

I like McLeod. I'm not sure he's ready to be a reliable 3C next season but who knows. From what I've watched, most of his assists have been secondary and a lot of his goals have been breakaways and penalty shots. I think he's still working on his offense but clearly has a ton of speed, playmaking and shooting ability

If you’ve got that kind of cap left you are just keeping Koskinen the final year or trading him and assets for another tender. The real cap crunch is 2022-23

I am not an Oilers fan, but this Forum is really well done. Only issue might be depth, but either than that this seems like a really well equipped playoff team.
