Moving a piece of the big 4

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 18, 2021

Description
Let's say the Leafs don't win the cup, highly unlikely, but technically possible. Lol
I'm sure Nylander would be the guy most people would think would be traded first, but what if he didn't return what you want or need to get the cup.
Matthews - might as well sell the team if you trade him.
Tavares - some might take him but his AAV and age work against him, so he isn't for everyone.
Marner - AAV still a problem but at his age is he worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Every team in the league could use a Marner.
So then what is the return on a guy like Marner?

San Jose is just entering their rebuild. They need to acquire 18 and 19 year olds, not trade them away for guys in their prime.

You need to find teams just exiting their rebuild that are on the cusp of being a Stanley Cup contender and the need for a top line winger. Colorado comes to mind.

Try making a San Jose and how they can handle Marner's contract. They can't. Most teams would prefer to keep their 5 pick and have 10 in cap space to spend on a UFA

I mean I guess if you are looking at the cheap years that a ELC provides then I get your argument, but based on talent I think he is better than anyone you will get out of this class.

I can’t ever take your comments seriously lmao

like the one about Bernier, and now this.

Can be any team really I just chose the Sharks. I'm just trying to get a feel for Marners value and if the Leafs would consider moving him.

If marner cost 4 mil less id say yes. The ELC star would be better for us

Minnesota is another team that could use a guy like Marner, but they're not going to trade their best players or prospects to do so.

That's the big conundrum with a guy like Marner. He's a fantastic player, but teams that would be interested aren't about to gut their roster to acquire him.

I could see a team giving up two 1sts, their second best prospect, and a "good" roster player or two (i.e. not their best players). If Toronto was willing to retain some salary (I don't see how they could), then they might be able to get more.

So for Minnesota, I could see two 1st round picks, a guy like Kevin Fiala, and Matt Boldy.

Yeah I toyed with a Marner trade to MN. Not sure it makes a lot of sense for the Wild but it was like Greenway, because he would be great in the Leafs middle 6 Zuccarello because he is Marner lite or very lite but you get what I'm saying, Dumba and a 1st. With money retained by MN to make it work, but I really couldn't make it make sense since Wild need centers. I just think highly of 16 would love to see him and Kaprizov together.

Mitch Marner is fantastic and has been doing amazing this year okay. Change my mind.

Plays that come to mind are those like on the penalty kill when he dives to get the luck out and force a change. Plays where he makes goals out of nothing (MTL? I think, could be Vancouver can’t remember).

He’s so good and people give him crap because he makes 8 figures and they don’t like that you get what you pay for. He’s worth it.

The main return for Toronto would have to be futures (i.e. the 1sts and Boldy in this case). Fiala would be made expendable because Marner would be replacing him. I don't think they'd include any of their centers in the trade, because as you said, it is their main position of need.
