Why does Tor have to take the worst part of this deal in order to trade away the best part of this deal? That makes no sense.

Whether you believe it or not Sanheim + 2nd rounder for JVR is the going rate. Now Toronto can retain salary on JVR or take on a bad contract like MacDonald to help Philly stay under the cap but it will come at an additional cost to Philly. If we're talking MacDonald here? I'd say change the 2nd rounder for a 1st rounder and possibly 4th-5th as a sweetener. If it's just Toronto retaining salary on JVR equivalent to what Philly would need to stay under, we're talking an extra 3rd rounder possibly a 2nd if its the max 50% retention.

Leafs certainly aren't taking back 5m in a questionable player in a position where the Leafs are strong. And why would the Leafs want to help the Flyers next year (or this year) with the acquisition of JVR. Leafs are battling the Flyers and others for playoffs spots. While the Leafs have "lots" of prospects at LWer, JVR is the only true scorer at LW. If JVR,Komarov, Bozak stayed with Leafs till they reached UFA status that would be OK with me cause I know they contribute to the team. October 2018, some of the youngsters should/better be ready for the NHL.

I think what Palhal is getting at is that if our young players keep improving cause they are still developing and getting better and we get a dman or 2 in free agency that complement our existing players they will be dangerous so why would we help Philly by gift wrapping JVR by not getting fair value.

Sanheim is basically a top 4 dman prospect and they would get a 2nd and 4th. I think that's pretty fair. A-mac would need salary retained but it's definitely fair. Look what a top 4 d man returned last summer...Taylor hall.

Just check the standings. Leafs are in 9th place. Correct me, isn't that battling for a playoff spot?

Sanheim is still a prospect though. Hasn't touched NHL hockey once in his life. Larsson although i think is overrated was playing 20+ mins a night on the top pairing with the Devils. Big difference.

JVR is a solid pt and goal scoring winger on a good contract. There is no reason for Toronto to have to take on MacDonald. Sanheim and the draft picks is fair enough. Adding MacDonald is just overkill.

Lol the team full of rookies is only 3 pts away with 3 games in hand on the Flyers. What does that say about them? Maybe you should keep quiet when your team is literally the worse defensive team in the league except for the Avs.......the team that was smoked by the Habs 10-1 in one of those games btw.........

I wasn't trying to say the trade fair for either side but just illustrating a point. Leafs fans continue to post ridiculous trades like Sanheim, Read, a 1st and a 2nd for JVR. There is no way and that's a gross overpayment. My point was to say the only way I see the Flyers accepting a trade from the Leafs is if AMac is involved. According to articles I have seen they are looking for defense (specifically a prospect) a starting defender and maybe another winger to fill a void on the bottom 6 and possibly draft compensation. That is a lot to pay for a year and a half rental for a player. I get what you are saying about maybe retaining salary on AMac but if the Flyers are retaining salary for him you can throw picks out the window, especially a 1st or 2nd rounder, and do Sanheim, AMac, and maybe a 4th for JVR.

The trade isn't going to happen but I was trying to illustrate what a fair value trade would look like instead of putting on Leafs goggles and saying JVR is worth a top D prospect, 2/3 firrst rounders, and a middle of the lineup forward because its not true which is why he is going to end up staying put.

Obviously I'm a Leaf fan. I'm not even saying the trade was not of fair value. But for the Leafs to trade for futures...may not in their immediate sights. JVR does have value to his team. Leafs have 3 Dmen prospects they are high on, so adding Sanheim may not be of great urgency. JVR has been consistently a 60 point player. Certainly not elite for me, but unless the Leafs would get immediate help in a position of need, there is no need to trade JVR.
