Initial Creation Date: Apr. 20, 2021
Published: Apr. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Move Debrusk and package for a top 4 LD now that LW is log jammed if Hall resigns. Could probably do better then Hanifin, maybe OEL but would have to make the money work.

Resign Kase if he can still play and stay healthy, bring in a backup plan like Rodrigues to compete for 3RW.

Resign Miller but have him as a 7th defenseman and you can manage his knee so it’s ready for playoffs.

If the options are stick with internal options, or go after hanifin, I’d say roll with what the bruins have. I find hanifin so unimpressive.

Shoot for something better, or keep it simple. Lindholm comes to mind. If you’re going to go after a guy like that, can’t re-sign Reilly. The bruins made such a big deal of letting left shot d walk so they could play the young guys they have developed, and you think that’s just going to last a year?

One year deal for krejci btw. Three is crazy.

    Ditch kase, insert studnicka.

    Kuraly is worth bringing back.

Too much $$$ for Krejci and Rask. They need to be resigned, but on more team-friendly deals. I'd look for a more reliable 2nd/3rd line RW than Kase. I'm also willing to bet Lauzon or Zboril are taken over Clifton. Lastly, Beecher is returning to Michigan next year. But if he was to sign, it'd be for the rookie maximum, not minimum ($925K).

Puck moving, creating scoring chances, strong defensively. His issue is actually hitting the net but that is fixable with training. Hes had a very under the radar breakout year, and since Ward was fired hes been producing at 0.5 ppg

I don't want him for that price. He *looks* like a good hockey player, but doesn't even carry his own contract's weight

Yeah that’s a good point about the Left side being a spot they’re trying to fix from within. Only issue is if you’re resigning guys like Krejci and Rask to 1-2 year deals then you can’t really wait for the kids to grow.

Yeah agree, Kase is a massive reach. Figured could give him an incentive type contract if he can even play anymore. I Stayed away from Studnicka at RW because I thought they were trying to develop him as a center.

If you go with internal options at LD what do you do with Debrusk, hang on to him and put him at 3RW again?

    Yes on debrusk.

Studnicka has to be in the NHL next year. Ditch Kase and ritchie if need be. They’ve played him at wing.

The kids have grown. They’ve looked good. Let at least one of them play the left side. The way i see it you’ve made the left side very very very marginally better. If you were going to go get an actual good left d, i might look at it differently.

I think he’s just solid at most things, not really good at anything. He’s a solid player. Not more than that.

Well you probably havent seen him that mich this year but hes taken major strides from previous seasons. I would say he's a clearcut #2 caliber dman at this point

It seemed like a set back year to me this year for Studnicka, he looked a lot better in the bubble of 2020 then he did in his games this year at the wing. So i assumed they were working on his game at center Prov. to get him ready to go when there’s a spot. Although, they brought in another center at the deadline, so a little confused where they’re headed with him.

Yeah would much prefer Lindholm to Hanifin but their GM seemed very confident about resigning him. Hanifin probably isn’t much of an improvement or what we need for that spot.

I’ll give you rock solid number four. I’ve seen Calgary play plenty. I love watching the north division. Never know what’s going to happen it that gong show.

There’s a purpose to going after a lindholm type. There’s no purpose to going after a hanifin type.

As for studnicka, i thought he was playing great. Then he got hurt, and i think they thought it better to let him spend some time getting to speed in the AHL. But he’s played five games. It’s not like they sent him down to work on stuff.

    that Krejci deal.

If by opening the window back up you mean assuring the rebuild will have good picks finishing bottom of the league, that contract will do it.

Agree to disagree then. Hanifin has hands down been Calgary's best defense this year.

If true, and i don’t think it is (for what it’s worth, he’s fourth in TOI. Not the be all end all, but still) then that’s a serious problem and probably why the flames aren’t making the playoffs. If a team can’t finish top four in the seven team north division with precisely zero good teams, they’re in trouble.

I dont entirely disagree with that assessment on the overall team, there are problems with the team.

As for the ice time thing, 2 things. 1) Hanifin has lead the team all season in EV ice time, Ward never gave him special teams time. 2) Under Sutter Hanifin has the 3rd most minutes (4 less than Tanev and 13 more than Andersson) to me this indicates that Calgary has taken a lot more penalties than they have drawn since both Gio and Tanev play 1st PK where Hanifin is more of the 3rd PK unit guy

Really don't see Calgary trading Hanafin. Giordano is nearing the end and with no high end replacement in sight they need him.

There will be plenty of opportunity after the expansion draft in the and all the way to the next trade deadline for a LD. Just have to be ready to strike with cap room and tradeable assets to move when the chance presents itself. Lauzon is the keeper for me. Not pretty but doesn't shrink away when big boy hockey starts.

It's the term for Krejci, not so much the $ although less is better. Still have to respect. A top tier NHL starter who still has it at 34. They get 6M, especially with only 2 year term.
