Although these rebuilds, where a team sends high priced players for draft picks and ELCs look good on paper they usually have no reality. The teams that may want MacKinnon etc...are usually contenders and have cap issues unless they send money back to the Avs in this case.
Two main pieces of the Leafs rebuild were the trading of Phanuef and Kessel. The Leafs got virtually nothing in return but did get cap space for years in the future, After this season, the Leafs get 4 years of non Phanuef and 7m a year to spend elsewhere and there trade was for a second rounder and AHLer Lindberg. Kessell (who had turned into just a average player with the Leafs) saved the Leafs 6.8m in cap space for 7 years and the Leafs when everything for considered was for prospect Kapanen and a second rounder.
And those first rounder from contending teams....look good on paper but won't be NHLers for four years if ever.
I don't know who is charge of personnel for the Avs, but it ain't working. The Leafs spend tens of millions of dollars firing Burke, Nonis, their do nothing VPs and many scouts and hired competent people. Not saying Avs ownership has the stomach to admit they were wrong in their hirings and millions to spent firing people, but might be a start instead of trading everyone.
