Eichel for Everyone

Created by: GoodIdeaAtTheTime
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2021
Published: May 14, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Going to try to make relatively comparable deals across all teams. Cap issues can always be resolved via separate deals. I avoided all NMCs/NTCs (based on what this trade page shows which, it turns out, is inaccurate at times) as it's safe to say no one wants to be in Buffalo right now.

Some of these will likely be very bad as I'm less familiar (and less interested in) certain western conference teams (looking at you, Arizona!).

The further I get into this the harder it gets to stay consistent... I spent way too much time on this for how bad it is.
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Fleury, Haydn
  2. Steel, Sam [RFA Rights]
  3. Terry, Troy
  4. 2021 1st round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
Three young players who fit a rebuild and a good 1st. Was thinking about Lindholm instead of Fleury if he doesn't intend to re-sign with Anaheim (Sabres flip him at some point). Maybe add another pick if light.
ANA
2.
BUF
  1. Capobianco, Kyle
  2. Dvorak, Christian
  3. Keller, Clayton
  4. 2022 1st round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
One of Schmaltz or Dvorak. Adjust as needed to make fair. Assumes they want to move Keller over Garland due to $. Chychrun isn't happening. I doubt they want to move Hayton or Soderstrom with the thin prospect pool they have so Capobianco it is...

It's Arizona. I have no clue. Add another pick as needed.
ARI
3.
BUF
  1. DeBrusk, Jake
  2. Studnicka, Jack
  3. Vaakanainen, Urho
  4. 2021 1st round pick (BOS)
  5. 2022 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Heavy on futures, picks will be late. May need to add a bit based on being divisional.
BOS
4.
BUF
  1. Dubé, Dillon [RFA Rights]
  2. Lindholm, Elias
  3. Zary, Connor
  4. 2022 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
With Monahan's NTC, Lindholm is the only piece that works here. Mangiapane would be short term so Dube as there's more control. My gut is telling me this is leaning towards an overpay...
CGY
5.
BUF
  1. Bokk, Dominik
  2. Niederreiter, Nino
  3. Suzuki, Ryan
  4. 2021 1st round pick (CAR)
  5. 2022 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Sabres can afford to wait on Bokk. Carolina can't. Sabres prefer Staal but can't see that happening for a number of reasons so they get stuck with Niederreiter who they flip at the deadline. 2 Picks as this one looks very light value wise (though maybe I'm wrong so feel free to remove one).
CAR
6.
BUF
  1. Connolly, Brett
  2. Hagel, Brandon [RFA Rights]
  3. Mitchell, Ian
  4. Strome, Dylan
  5. 2021 1st round pick (CHI)
Additional Details:
Replace Strome with Pius Suter as you see fit.

I really can't see this working out. Doubt Dach gets moved. They can't keep all their good young defensemen. Assumes Toews and/or Seabrook retire or they come up with some other cap gymnastics, I guess. Connolly is a cap dump (hopefully that's right, if not maybe change to De Haan).
CHI
7.
BUF
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Graves, Ryan
  3. Newhook, Alex
  4. 2021 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Destination makes far more sense for Reinhart. Operates under the assumption that Graves is exposed to the expansion draft and can't be protected by COL. Otherwise replace him with Toews maybe). On the fence between Newhook and Bowers for value purposes. Also take your pick of Jost or Compher.

Either way, no chance.
COL
8.
BUF
  1. Carlsson, Gabriel
  2. Domi, Max
  3. Korpisalo, Joonas
  4. Werenski, Zachary
  5. 2021 1st round pick (CBJ)
Additional Details:
Hinges on Columbus wanting to move Werenski which I'm not sold on. Domi is a one year trade away at the deadline player for Buffalo. Korpisalo is also a guy you roll the dice on for one year to give UPL more time (assuming no Ullmark). Buffalo gives Carlsson a legit shot in the NHL as a throw in. If light, add another pick.
CBJ
9.
BUF
  1. Benn, Jamie
  2. Eriksson, Albin [Reserve List]
  3. Honka, Julius [RFA Rights]
  4. Robertson, Jason
Additional Details:
Dallas decides to shake things up by moving Benn & Seguin. Getting a massive upgrade (yes, it is) for a minor cap increase is going to cost though. If light, add a first. If heavy, maybe remove one of the non-Benn pieces and add a 1st.
DAL
10.
BUF
  1. Larkin, Dylan
  2. Rasmussen, Michael [RFA Rights]
  3. Svechnikov, Evgeny [RFA Rights]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (DET)
Additional Details:
Fairly sure Yzerman didn't draft Larkin. Buffalo gets to years to get his value up before trading him again. Sabres get a very high pick in a weak draft, a question mark in Rasmussen (or replace with Veleno to balance), and a lottery ticket, flight risk in Svechnikov who doesn't add much value.
DET
11.
BUF
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
  2. Turris, Kyle
  3. Yamamoto, Kailer [RFA Rights]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Not happening so it really doesn't matter what I put in... Won't move anyone cost controlled. Add picks to...oh why bother...
EDM
12.
BUF
  1. Bobrovsky, Sergei
  2. Denisenko, Grigori
  3. Duclair, Anthony [RFA Rights]
  4. Lundell, Anton [Reserve List]
  5. 2021 1st round pick (FLA)
  6. 2022 1st round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Florida overpays to get rid of Bobrovsky as Buffalo just decides to give up for a few years. Clears the way for Knight. Lundell is unavoidable in this situation. Florida recoups assets if they end up trading any of their big three. I have no idea if this is even close. Either way, don't see a deal getting done here.
FLA
13.
BUF
  1. Faber, Brock [Reserve List]
  2. Kupari, Rasmus
  3. Quick, Jonathan
  4. Turcotte, Alex
  5. 2021 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Quick is a cap dump. You only get Turcotte or Byfield.
LAK
14.
BUF
  1. Beckman, Adam
  2. Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]
  3. Rask, Victor
  4. Rossi, Marco
  5. 2021 1st round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Rask is a cap dump. Do they pay Beckman to get rid of him? Maybe? If not, remove him.
MIN
15.
BUF
  1. Fleury, Cale [RFA Rights]
  2. Kotkaniemi, Jesperi [RFA Rights]
  3. Kulak, Brett
  4. Poehling, Ryan [RFA Rights]
  5. 2021 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Suzuki isn't happening. This might be an overpay but Kotkaniemi isn't really an A piece. None of these really are.
MTL
16.
BUF
  1. Farrance, David
  2. Johansen, Ryan
  3. Tomasino, Philip
  4. 2021 1st round pick (NSH)
Additional Details:
Nashville gets rid of Johansen and only picks up a bit of cap. Just couldn't make myself include Duchene in the deal.
NSH
17.
BUF
  1. Hischier, Nico
  2. Johnsson, Andreas
  3. 2021 1st round pick (NJD)
  4. 2021 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Johnsson doesn't seem to be fitting. Buyer's remorse? If you get Hischier I doubt you get Zacha or Bratt. High first but Hischier has been good but not great. Paying for potential is always dangerous.
NJD
18.
BUF
  1. Adams, Collin
  2. Bellows, Kieffer [RFA Rights]
  3. Bolduc, Samuel
  4. Ladd, Andrew
  5. 2021 2nd round pick (COL)
  6. 2022 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Don't see a deal getting done with NYI. I broke my NTC rule as Ladd might waive if he gets a possible shot at NHL ice time again... Added the COL 2nd to account for that.
NYI
19.
BUF
  1. Chytil, Filip [RFA Rights]
  2. Georgiev, Alexandar
  3. Lundkvist, Nils [Reserve List]
  4. Strome, Ryan
  5. 2021 1st round pick (NYR)
  6. 2021 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Here we go! Going without the big three but if this is an underpay, change Chytil for Kakko and lost the random 3rd I tossed in just in case Buffalo wants to try an offersheet.

Take your pick of Buchnevish or Strome. Either one would be gone in 1-2 years for Buffalo.
NYR
20.
BUF
  1. Batherson, Drake [RFA Rights]
  2. Brown, Logan [RFA Rights]
  3. Tierney, Chris
  4. 2021 1st round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Another one I don't see happening. But Ottawa has so many good young forwards. Pick your favorite two (I don't see Sanderson being available). I picked Batherson as he likely ranks below Norris and the Sabres will want someone who's proven something in the NHL. Logan Brown is still a bit of a question mark who seems to keep getting passed so I chose him second. Tierney is a one year rental flipped at the deadline for whatever.
OTT
21.
BUF
  1. Cates, Noah [Reserve List]
  2. Gostisbehere, Shayne
  3. Patrick, Nolan [RFA Rights]
  4. Voracek, Jakub
Additional Details:
Ghost is a cap dump here though he might conceivably add value for Buffalo. The big piece is obviously Voracek if Philly is willing to move him. He adds a bit of snarl that Buffalo badly needs. Roll the dice on Nolan Patrick being healthy and finding his form with the other kids in Buffalo. A nice depth piece in Cates. Add a 1st if you think it's light.
PHI
22.
BUF
  1. Blueger, Teddy [RFA Rights]
  2. DeSmith, Casey
  3. McCann, Jared
  4. 2022 1st round pick (PIT)
  5. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Well this isn't going to happen either. Just nothing here. Pick a goalie.
PIT
23.
BUF
  1. Chmelevski, Alexander
  2. Meier, Timo
  3. Wiesblatt, Ozzy
  4. 2021 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Another one I just have no clue. This looks light so add another 1st? Either way, don't see it getting done.
SJS
24.
BUF
  1. Barbashev, Ivan [RFA Rights]
  2. Dunn, Vince [RFA Rights]
  3. Thomas, Robert [RFA Rights]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Don't see this happening either. They probably don't want to deal Thomas but who cares. Sabres don't go back to this well.
STL
25.
BUF
  1. Cernak, Erik
  2. Cirelli, Anthony
  3. Joseph, Mathieu
  4. 2022 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Another one: just not going to happen but for continuity's sake...
TBL
26.
BUF
  1. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]
  2. Kerfoot, Alexander
  3. Nylander, William
  4. 2022 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Yet another one with no chance of happening.
TOR
27.
BUF
  1. McDonough, Aidan [Reserve List]
  2. Miller, J.T.
  3. Podkolzin, Vasily [Reserve List]
  4. Woo, Jett
Additional Details:
Get Miller for 2 years to develop the kids then flip him elsewhere. One solid prospect and a pair of maybes. If it looks a bit light, add a 1st.
VAN
28.
BUF
  1. Brisson, Brendan [Reserve List]
  2. Glass, Cody
  3. Smith, Reilly
  4. 2021 1st round pick (VGK)
  5. 2021 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Smith's no trade goes away so Buffalo brings him in for one year. Not sure on value here. Late 1st led me to add an early 2nd.
VGK
29.
BUF
  1. Alexeyev, Alexander
  2. Eller, Lars
  3. McMichael, Connor
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (WSH)
  5. 2022 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Lars Eller or Nick Jensen as place holders for two years that get flipped. Don't see this ever working out.
WSH
30.
BUF
  1. Connor, Kyle
  2. Perfetti, Cole
  3. Vesalainen, Kristian
  4. 2021 1st round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
And finally... I've given up by this point.

Buffalo rejects that Dallas deal faster than Phil Kessel can eat a hotdog.

Devils decline. Rather have Nico and a top 5 pick

Im pretty sure the Canes would run with that. Just got to get Seattle to take Gardiner or Skjei and they would be golden.

Those Anaheim & Philly trades are in contention for the worst Eichel trades I've ever seen.

I don't see how Anaheim gets him for 3 okay young players and a high first yet NJ is giving a young top 6 C with solid potential (who happens to be their captain), a top 5 pick, and another first. That Ducks trade would be like the Devils giving Foote, Mercer, Walsh and the first.

with that said I would accept this trade, just feels like other teams are giving significantly less.

At least I accomplished that much. Wasn't a complete waste of time.

I'll take only one being hilariously bad. Looking back at it again...yeah. Hard to argue.

I know you weren't serious about trading him to Edmonton, but here's Edmonton's side of the proposed trade.

That's some cap magic! I don't think the offer is insane, I just assumed it would end with Edmonton in cap jail for a long time.

Not this summer, Edmonton has tonnes of space. I signed several mid-priced UFA's (Nugent-Hopkins, Larsson, Ullmark, Coleman), took on Eichel's $10M and didn't even buyout James Neal.

Re: Ottawa you "don't see happening"

Senators actually make a great landing spot for Eichel. I'm a scout for Hockey Canada and I've talked to some people that know Dorion well (not fully creditable to you, but to me it is fwiw), and Dorion has reportedly been "quietly keeping a close eye on the Eichel trade front and believe they'd be a front runner for him if Buffalo decided to move him" and the more I look at it, it makes a ton of sense.

1. Ottawa has the prospects Buffalo would be looking for
2. Ottawa has a need for a front line dynamic centre
3. Ottawa has the cap space to take on Eichel without Buffalo having to take a bad contract back
4. Eichel fits Ottawa's rebuild timeline
5. Melnyk said he'd be willing to spend to the cap soon and that Ottawa would be a competitive team in that time frame

Although for this, from what I've heard again, there are 4 untouchables: Tkachuk, Stuetzle, Chabot, and Sanderson. With Ottawa having recently been playing more of their younger prospects, it lead me to believe maybe they were showcasing them for a blockbuster this off-season.

So I thought of something like this that makes a ton of sense for both sides:

Ottawa Senators
F - Jack Eichel

Buffalo Sabres
F - Drake Batherson (RFA rights)
F - Shane Pinto
D - Jacob Bernard-Docker
20211st round pick (assuming it's top 10)
2023 2nd round pick (multiple conditions that make it eligible to become a 2023 1st round pick based on Ottawa's success and Eichel's)

This give Ottawa the front line centre they need, and it gives Buffalo high quality prospects that are closer to the NHL level than some other teams might offer.

I hope you're right (your presentation and rationale is reasonable enough) and I don't disagree with any of the untouchables (especially Sanderson though I thought Norris might be on the list too). Difficult offer to beat with 3 solid prospects/players and a top ten pick plus. Only issue is if LA or someone out West is willing to come close then Eichel's going west.

From what I've heard, Ottawa highly values Norris. It's not that he's untouchable, but they'd only consider him in the right deal. I think Eichel would be on the short list of players that Ottawa would be willing to include Norris in. He's more on the list of "highly unlikely to trade unless you blow us away with something we can't refuse" players. I think Ottawa would still be able to make a competitive deal without him in it, hence my proposal.

As much as LA is talked about with Eichel, I don't think they're really in on him much. They're not trading Byfield, and Turcotte would be on that similar list that Norris is on for LA. From there, LA doesn't have too much high end defensive prospects to include outside of Bjornfot and with how thin they are on defence, it doesn't make sense for the Kings to go after Eichel. They'll be fine down the middle with what they have in Byfield, Turcotte, Vilardi (who they're extremely high on), Kupari, Kopitar, etc. They're mainly focusing on a high end left handed defence to play with Doughty. I wonder if they'll use Turcotte and go after Werenski this summer, seems like a perfect fit for both sides to me.

Back to Eichel though, I see the list of teams to get him as an extremely short one. That being (in no particular order):
1. Ottawa
2. New York Rangers
3. Boston
4. Vegas (if they can figure their cap out)
5. Philadelphia (long shot, but Flyers are a team to make big splashes)
6. Carolina (sneaky under the radar team to land Eichel)

That's really all I see as a fit for both the team acquiring Eichel and Buffalo.

I think Carolina is only in on Eichel if Dougie walks in UFA. Otherwise they don't have the money

They can move other guys to fit Eichel in. Depending who Seattle takes too, it'll open up more money. And they'd likely include Trocheck in a Eichel deal so it could work pretty easy
