Why not just protect Holl instead of having to trade something to protect him?

Avs decline, and its more than an underpay,
You have to give up value the avs want to part with Jost

and if Bellemare is willing to sign a 1 year 800k deal, why would he leave the avs, a place that he loves playing

1. If Kerfoot is exposed, Holl would be protected. And vice versa.

2. definitely an underpay. I’m optimistic for Hirvonen, I like him but Jost in already an NHLer so you’ll need a bit more there. I’d assume something like a 3rd + 5th. Maybe.

3. The Rangers aren’t the right team for Dermott. And I’m not sure he has that kind of value. There’s definitely a market for him, but not there, not for that I don’t think.

4. Let Bogo walk or he has to be okay with being a depth guy. The only way Liljegren will get better at this point is by playing actual NHL minutes.

I originally wrote this, but I realized after that this is wrong. It's so they take on kerfoots cap hit/ don't take dermott

The reason a lot of people are using is that the Leafs dont have any qualified defensmen to expose after Holl.. so by the rules they have to expose one of Rielly/Brodie/Muzzin/Holl

My argument is that all it takes is signing someone like Dermott to an extension prior to the draft to allow for protecting Holl..

I havent heard anything either, but the rules are technically that one defensman who is signed through next year and has either played 40 games this year or 70 games over the last two years in the NHL must be exposed. I assume that as the last two years have been shortened that these requirements will be changed to "27 games this year or 54 games over the last two years".

This would mean that the leafs could pull some funny buisness like signing Ron Hainsey to a 1-year league min contract just to expose him, then they could burry his contract in the AHL and scratch him every game.. This would need the player to be on-board, but I dont think it would take to much convincing to have him sign a piece of paper for $800,000 to do nothing for the year... They could even have him act as a sort of development coach while paying him his player salary..

I made a separate comment as to why Holl cant be protected unless another eligible player is signed and exposed instead of him.. I do agree though that Holl should and likely will be protected.

I think Dermott still has a place on this team as a 6/7 defensman, he is still only 24 and many defensmen dont fully develop until their mid/late 20s.. The only issue will be if he is willing to sign for under $1M again..

I disagree regarding Bogo and Liljegren.. I think Liljegren can definately improve from another full year as a top pairing guy in the AHL while playing the odd stint with the big club next year. Similar to the Dermott comment, lots of defensmen take a bit longer to develop. Playing big minutes in the AHL can often be better than bottom pairing NHL minutes.. Plus, as a general rule for contending teams, you should never have a player on your roster "to develop".. Liljegren (and Sandin for that matter) will have to make the team on merit alone.

With regards to Bogo, I think he definately has bought in to being a depth guy and helping teach the young guys how to be good pro's. At the end of the day though, he has to be better than Sandin/Dermott/Liljegren since we want to put together the best roster possible.

Yes, the requirements have been changed to 27/54. And you're right that Toronto can simply sign Dermott to an extension or Bogosian to a new contract and expose him in order to meet the "one qualified defenseman" exposure rule. I fully expect Toronto to do that and protect The Big Four forwards to go 8-1. We'll see if I'm right.

Kerfoot has a very reasonable cap hit and you are trading Dermott anyway...

You are adding Jost (who is younger, but not as good as Kerfoot imo) for only $1.5M less but then signing Coleman for $4M for a 3rd line spot that gets 11 minutes a night...

Why does COL trade Jost? It isn’t because they are looking for prospects. He is their 3C for at least the next contract literally would have to over pay because you are asking the Avs to create a hole in their line up. Easy no. Add a 3rd and it’s still an easy no. Add a 2nd and it’s an easy no. The Avs are about winning now.

Exactly. They'll just sign Dermott to expose him. They kept Holl when Babcock wouldn't play him and now that he's playing in their top 4 their not gonna potentially lose him for free.
