Counter point: no goalie deserves big money because even the best goalie in the league can randomly just suck

Counter counter point: no professional hockey player should ever become a goalie since they're never getting enough appreciation of the hard work they do

Goalies get a ton of credit when they're playing well, but if they aren't they can sink a season.

But how many have won a Hart or a Conn Smyth

counter counter counter point: goalies should just be removed from the game and teams should run 3F 3D every game

Saros is having an unread season, but it’s only one year and $8m for 8 years is steeeeeeeeeep. I think he’ll sign the Lehner deal, but we’ll see.

I mean to be fair, a good amount of goalies win the Conn Smythe. Quick and Thomas won recently, I think Cam Ward won, and Giguere won the Conn Smythe as the losing goalie.

That'd be so stupid. Can you even imagine 60 minutes of empty netters...

Goalie as a position is the most dependent on how the other 5 in front of him play, but having certain abilities definitely help.

True but I’d argue Binnington and Vasilevsky had similar impacts to them but didn’t. Matt Murray when he was good stood on his head too

JFRESH has a article or thread about this but goalies are so random.. like if I remember the lines correctly. When you take the best goalies from a 3 or 5 year span. Almost all of the top guys regress and fall with a few being consistent and then the average play in the league is so "random" that their are realistically few goalies who actually dramatically impact the game in a positive way.

Yet at the same time the saying "hockey should be called goalie" is true; if you have a bad goalie you literally will not be successful. I don't think any goalie should be paid over 6 mil ish because you can have guys like Lehner or a tandem of two that do the job. Helly, Vasi are the only goalies certain of a higher than 6m price tag imo. Otherwise its usually just a new year and a new performance in net from the same game. Gibson used to be apart that list but he has begun struggling (maybe due to the sheer workload). Ex: Martin Jones was literally in conversations for being a top 5-3 goalie at his peak... he is now literally the worst goalie in the league if not just about close to it..

Obviously things aren't black or white in net or with stats but.. usually its not worth paying a goalie more than 6 and term just makes things worse. I love goaltending and the in's and outs of it but it is just a crapshoot

It's a crapshoot mostly, but at the end of the day I think all recent cup winners have been known from having a solid goalie at the time, so I don't think anyone can deny the importance of having a reliable goalie when it truly matters.

The reason why there's so much variety in goalie performance is something very hard to explain, but if I had to guess there's going to be a huge market for the likes of Phillip Grubauer should he hit free agency. Even if his career statistics aside from this year are bit of an anomaly compared to the rest of his career.

Guess the phrase of a player being just as good as his most recent performance very much applies to goalies.
