Initial Creation Date: May 30, 2021
Published: May 30, 2021

Description
This team will hopefully be bad enough to earn a top draft pick, which along with all the picks from this year, may give Stan a solid baseline to move forward and compete at a high level again.

In other news, we NEED Colton Dach.

Maybe the Rangers pick, that was my other thought, but Philly seems like they aren't done trying to compete, and need a RD bad. Murphy definitely is worth a 1st though.

Maybe for a top 5 team who is going all in at the deadline but he’s worth at most a second round pick.

Why unload Dylan Strome for a pick that might at best become a player as good as Dylan Strome 🤨 especially when there's zero urgency to move him

I think he's worth a first, but you may have a point, the best time to deal him could be the deadline. Thank you Carterman13

Strome has declined each year as a hawk, and the team needs to tank for a year, which collition's schemes will help, and you never know with the draft. I think Suter is just as effective as a 3C as Strome. Strome was terrible in the playoffs last year and scratched in a huge game against Nashville this year. I think he's out.

Teams get desperate. I mean Blake Coleman fetched 2 first round picks. (Coleman is a great value player but 2 firsts wow).

Coleman is a beast and had a great deal, I doubt TBL regrets it obviously bc of the cup though lol. Some wack players have been traded for way more than they should have been. Just look at Stanbo's gem for dale wise and fleishman or however you spell it.

The key to a rebuild is young assets yet this also unloads Nylander, Gaudette, Zadorov for basically nothing... at least swap them for other prospects

Alex Nylander for Tyson Jost
Gaudette for CFischer
Zadorov for NMerkley

Etc.

Oh agreed that Coleman is super underrated and has a great contract and that Tampa doesn’t regret that but 2 firsts is crazy. So if Murphy has a good season next year Boston might be calling.

I love Fischer and tried to use Nylander who I think still could figure it out to get out of a deal that could hurt a huge push towards contention the year after next. Wouldn't mind these moves and also thanks my guy!

I thought about Boston too, a big solid Irish name would fit on their relatively underwhelming d-group, but want that Philly first

How would you evaluate de Haan at this point? I think of him as a decent 4/5 D on a good team, who plays solid defense but has limited offensive capabilities. Admittedly though, I haven’t watched him play recently and he’s not the kinda guy who gets talked about ever lol. If that’s kinda ballpark what his current scouting report would be, what kind of value would you expect to fetch for him at half retained (assuming this is an offseason trade)? Something like a 4th? Also, can he play his off-side effectively or does he have to play LD to be useful?

Also, how likely do you think the Hawks are to deal Zadorov? I could think of several teams willing to take a chance on him for his physicality/age, but again, my knowledge of Zadorov is limited to him being a great pickup in banger leagues in fantasy hockey lol. Why does he get dealt so often in ACGMs? What’s his current scouting report?

You've never watched him play before and it shows. Murphy is worth a 1st all day long. Hawks would rather extend him than trade him anyways

Bad assessment. I'm guessing you haven't watched him play much. He's one of the most underrated shut down defensemen in the entire league and at a very friendly cap hit. Hawks probably won't move him unless it's a big overpay at the TDL.

Firstly, de Haan, is a serviceable NHL'er who can play both sides effectively as a shutdown D. He's solid yet unspectacular, a 4th would probably be fair value tbh unless he had a good first half to the season leading into the TDL then he may fetch a 3rd.

Zads is likely to find a new home and would likely fetch a 2nd though reason for him potentially being moved is mainly because of the style of D he brings. If your after a physical D man then he's the guy you want to bully opponents but we are trying to build and it hasn't worked to date. That could well change this season if we re-sign him.

Thanks for the analysis! I’ve been thinking that if Seattle ends up taking Gio, the Flames could use someone exactly like de Haan. Ideally Valimaki would step into the 2LD spot beside Tanev, but if he needs to be eased into that role, a guy who can play 2LD as the #4 to start would be nice, and then slide back to 3RD as the #5 when Valimaki steps up, and spend the rest of the year on the 3rd pair mentoring a guy like Mackey. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Flames target him if they can’t get a guy they like in free agency. He sounds like the type of veteran Sutter would love as well.

As for Zadorov, I think a lot of teams would be happy to give up a 2nd or 3rd for him. Physicality goes a long way in the playoffs, having a bruiser on your bottom pair (assuming you have the depth) is nice. He’s also young enough that up and coming teams may be willing to take a chance on him and use him in a top 4 role in the short term before transitioning him down the lineup as they improve (as a Sens fan, if he shot right I’d be willing to trade for him right now lol).

I follow the flames, de Haan would be a good fit for that role where he can play the 2LD and drop to the 3RD as required as the young core develops. We have Keith who can do that and our biggest need is a 1LD or someone projected to be a 1LD. We have a lot of de Haan Calibre D so a trade would benefit both Imo. He likes to block shots so Sutter would love him.

Do you think the Hawks target Carson Lambos in the draft this year? I think 11 is too late to have a chance at Power/Edvinsson/Hughes but Lambos should be available and was previously seen as a top 10 pick (slipped a little, mostly because a bunch of forwards improved their stock).

I think he would have to be on the shortlist although I also think Lysell/McTavish would also be on that list and depends on if anyone drops. The recent NHL rankings for NA showed McTavish as #2 which was a huge surprise to me but I think we may see some surprises in the top 10 this year.

Your pick is nearby, who are you thinking the flames would look at in the draft?

I think the Flames target Lucius, he’s a high skilled right shot forward, which is a huge organizational need. I think he’d fit very nicely on a line with our other recent 1sts, Pelletier-Zary-Lucius seems like a pretty solid line lol, Pelletier can cover some of the defense, Lucius is the pure goal scorer, and all three have good skill, the only thing missing is size. The way I look at the draft I think the top 8 is pretty set (in no particular order: Power, Beniers, Guenther, Eklund, Clarke, Edvinsson, Hughes, Johnson) and then I’d have Wallstedt/McTavish/Lysell as the next 3 best players (I think only Wallstedt would have the ability to disrupt that top 8 group as an off the board pick personally). For Calgary at 12, this leaves guys like Lambos, Lucius, Sillinger, and Chibrikov available and I think Lucius should be the target (if McTavish or Lysell fall though, I’d grab them first). If Chicago does wind up taking Lambos to fill their need at LD, then maybe Calgary winds up getting one of McT/Lysell though lol

I think we would go the safer pick with McTavish/Lysell before Lambos though if we did go Lambos I would completely understand why and have no issues. I just think where we are with our rebuild and the risks associated with his injuries, as much as thats an excuse it could be looked at. Contradicting myself somewhat though I do think Lambos will have a good career as an NHL player and whoever picks him will be getting a great prospect. reiterating I think its the risk factor that pushes Stan towards the forward options.

I agree the top 8 is pretty consensus however I think there could be a surprise or 2.

Who do you think the Hawks go with if the top 8 goes as expected, and McTavish/Lysell go next? I’m really not sure who the Canucks take because I think they need D but BPA is clearly a forward so they probably go one of those two unless they trade back, and Ottawa needs C/RW prospects so I anticipate them taking one of those two. Are Commesso/Lankinen/Delia highly enough regarded as the future in net to pass on Wallstedt for Lambos/Lucius/Sillinger or do they just go Wallstedt in that scenario? I’ve been looking and I reckon the only teams that need a goalie ahead of them are San Jose at 7 (definitely could take him if they have the guts) and Detroit at 6 (guts are not a problem but they desperately need a top LD and this is their best shot to secure that, I imagine they’ll reach for Cossa with the Washington first if anything) but everyone else is kinda set until Chicago/Ottawa who might consider it but may have greater needs.
