Blues 2021-22

Description
An analytic-driven roster for the Blues that I made while figuring out how to use the app. Odds are the blues aren't gonna get Schwartz for 4.5, but that's honestly about how much he's worth. You throw picks at Seattle to take Scandella, and as much as I don't want to see it, the writing is on the wall with Dunn getting dealt.

Moves that might irritate blues fans:
Barbashev is bad, I'm sorry, but letting him go is the best move the blues can make, he is not an NHL level player, the analytics show it.

PSA: Really made this for myself a few weeks ago, so the UFAs would obviously be signed on multi-year deals

this is pretty terrible, Barbashev is way better than Sanford. No need for Stasny or Nemeth. Even if Sanford stays he only gets 1.5 like last year and Danault and Schwartz will probably get more somewhere else.

Hard disagree on Barbashev and Sanford, Barbashev is a bottom 10% player in the league over the last 3 years, and Sanford has shown signs of being very much above average. I also used expected contract values found on evolvinghockey for the free agents, so if Schwartz and Danault want more, then so be it. Sanford could also very well get less, but this was honestly just a rough draft of what I would like to see with the blues roster

I like it and if offered for real I can't see why Yzerman would no.

Dunn fills a need for Detroit and he's a good player and the right age.

If I was Yzerman I'd accept.

Problem is, even those "individual analytics" are heavily influenced by the players around you. Sanford was placed on a line with ROR and Perron for much of the last 3 years while Barbashev was playing 4th line minutes. People put too much stock into analytics on individuals in a team sport like hockey. Doesn't mean they don't have their place but they're not the end all be all.

The eye-test also has its flaws but you're entirely correct, both analytics and eye-test needs to be used when evaluating a player.
They compliment each other well and will expose systemic errors in each other.

I still don't love giving up the 1st for Dunn, but I wouldn't be mad about it if it happened. Due to the expansion draft, I still feel like 38OA is a very fair deal, but if 23OA is what needs to get it done, I get it and I'd be ok with it.

I mean, I think they can help certainly. Like you said, it should be used as a complimentary device rather than an evaluation of the player. Analytics can't look at player positioning nor really determine how much pressure a forward places on defensemen while forechecking. These are two areas where, using the above example, Barbashev dominates Sanford.

I get it and if this were 2022, I dont think Yzerman would entertain it. However, it's 2021 where there is a major drop-off in talent after the first 5 players so i don't think it's unreasonable.
