TOR
  1. Dubé, Dillon [RFA Rights]
  2. Tkachuk, Matthew
Additional Details:
Ok I tried to model this like the Tkachuk-Laine trade

-Two disgruntled stars
-Laine had a higher salary than Dubois, so WPG retained 26%. I cut it down to 19% with marner cuz of our cap situation, but same concept.
-WPG included another player in their deal (Roslovic), so i went with Dube here but if you want i can change it.
-CBJ included a 3rd, so i had the leafs including a 3rd

It's not exactly the same, but i was trying to match the concept.
What do you think?? Please leave constructive comments below
CGY
  1. Marner, Mitchell ($2,071,570 retained)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (TOR)

Leafs are way better off just keeping marner then moving him with retention.

No chance Leafs retain $2M+ for 4 years.

As a Leaf fan, I don't mind the deal. The big advantage of is in two years when Tkachuk leaves as a UFA....well there is 9m cap for another player by not having a retained Marner

I mean we could sign Tkachuk for a 5-6 year deal

Minutes after this deal is announced, Kyle Dubas tears off his dress shirt to reveal a Calgary Flames logo underneath, laughing as he takes a job in their front office.

No chance the Leafs retain any salary in which they trade away the best player in the deal. I understand your rational why you did what you said, but it's a poor deal for the Leafs and there's no way around that. It makes the team worse, even if everyone is mad at Marner for his playoff performance.

Can I just add that Marner's contract is not a "problem" nor something the Leafs have to "get out of." He's an excellent player who is paid pretty much what's hes worth. Would I like it to be a bit cheaper, of course. Would I have preferred it if we didn't have a pandemic that caused lots of bad things, including the flat cap, of course. But that doesn't mean you trade him on 50 cents to the dollar, and Dubas won't either

Tkachuk's QO is 9 mil next year. Unless you offer him 10 on a long term deal there is no reason for him not to accept the QO and hit FA in a year. Marner at 11 looks like a steal compared to Tkachuk at 10

Sorry, these trades that are made "hoping" to sign a player are really just useless fantasy. I don't know Tkachuk's motivation to sign with the Leafs. In two years, he can explore his UFA options, which is probably the reason why he wants to leave Calgary.

This is the best Marner trade I have seen. Always a good idea to get inspired by recent trades.

The only flaw in your resonning is the retaining. Winnipeg only paid for half a year of Laine's salary. IMO, a smaller amount would make it more fair (3x1M).

This said, I would totally understand Calgary passing on getting Marner's full contract. He's not worth close to that kind of money.

Nice job, and I dont say that often 👌

I think a straight up 1 for 1 with no retention makes most sense - Can't see TO retaining that much for that long and can't see CGY adding Dube to the mix. The $4M saving this year and approx. $2M next would give TO the cap flexibility to secure Hyman if they wanted. Marner's contract and TK's intangibles tend to balance the value.

Just for the record I do not want to trade TK unless for Eichel because of his intangibles but the value is there in a Marner trade.
