M Tkachuk to CAR Scenario

Created by: Storm3456
Team: 2021-22 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2021
Published: Jun. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Scenario I thought out for Tkachuk to find his way to Carolina. He brings grit, top six (more like top line) goal scoring, which could be what Carolina needs and more. Combined with a Dougie Hamilton sign and trade, and Carolina could pull it off.

There is no way you get that kind of return for Hamilton.

this is a norris type dman we are talking about. Patrick’s time is no doubt done in PHI. he’s even expressed he wants out. you’re only giving up one first for a player who if he weren’t a UFA, could easily attract 2 firsts. but that’s why it’s a 3rd instead because it’s not guaranteed he signs. PHI who are desperate for dman should be all over this. it’s a much better option than overpaying off Jones.

Except that the Flyers could say "we will pay you $9 mil per year for 7 years if you wait" and then don't have to give up anything. He makes $1 mil less over the term but can get more than that in his 8th year as a UFA. You might get a pick or 2 but it will not be a 1st!

Going from 8 million to 9 million is a huge jump. Plus that extra year is the main reason teams are looking to trade for him rather than wait until FA. Nolan Patrick doesn't seem like he will work in Philly, so there isn't much to lose there. Going for Hamilton indicates you are all in for this year and the first should be somewhere from 20-32. I'm a fan of both teams, I would not mind a trade like this coming from Carolina. Defense has been a mess since Niskanen retired and messed up the pairings. Hamilton brings that stability back and the rest of the D should follow. No more Provorov - Braun.

Storm pretty much said what i was gonna say. and it’s not like other teams aren’t interested. if the flyers trade for the UFA’s rights of Hamilton, there is a higher chance that they do in fact get him signed. they’ll ask him if PHI is a preferred destination so that both sides agree mutually on the trade. we saw the same thing last off season with Edmundson and MTL.

I really like turbo and think he’s one of the more underrated players in the league. That being said, Tkachuk ceiling is higher and he brings an edge that frankly the Canes and especially Turbo don’t have. I’d be torn on a trade like this but I wouldn’t move Aho, Svech, Necas, Slavin, Pesce and I’m assuming the Flames would want a good player back versus futures only since Sutter is their coach and wouldn’t be interested in a rebuild.

Yes but you aren't getting 13OA for what are basically his UFA rights.

Think you're underselling Turbo here. Even if turbo is going the other way, its a 1 4 1.

Not to mention Turbo has 3 years of CHEAP control and Tkachuk only has 2 years of control and is more expensive

The draft pick is in 2022 not the 13th pick this year.

I'd be happy with it if that's how it played out, just don't share the same view. Maybe Bokk+Turbo in my opinion if Suzuki is too much. Think it'd be a win win though.

Oops my bad. I still wouldn’t trade it. Especially in the deep 2022 draft

To me, Teravainen is a key part to the Carolina forward core. Trading him for Tkachuk wouldn't get the desired effect I was going for in this scenario, which was to bolster the Canes forwards by getting at least a top six forward. In terms of skill, Tkachuk would probably be a bit of an upgrade. But in terms of team morale, and all the stuff you cant measure with a number, it would hurt the team in so many different ways.
