Created by: Quillanrocks
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 23, 2021
Published: Jun. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Captain gets paid.
- Makar's BIG money deal gets kicked down the road for 2 seasons.
- Grubauer accepts less than what is offered on open market
- Seattle expansion is utilized to remove a distraction and make room for others
- A key player is traded to make room for Byram, free up dollars to add elsewhere.
- Colorado adds 3 players that played to at least the conference finals in both the past 2 seasons, and another with 3 cups in just over a decade.
- For fun (and grit, and energy), Colorado adds the son of a Colorado legend

- Colorado is still deep, with stocked cupboards and countless ways to improve. They are set up to go for it the next 2 years AND prepared to re-up both Mackinnon and Makar in 2023.

Can't see Colorado trading Girard unless a massive payday comes back.

This is proposal makes me sad. I love Faber, but this is a great proposal for a team desperately trying to find a #1D that doesn't break the bank.

To be blunt I think all of those moves are terrible for the Avs

    Those are just awful moves,

Avs aren’t trading nuke for a 1 year rental
They aren’t exposing kadri and paying for him to be taken

Since you are over the cap looks like you traded girard based on the comments and get is the last thing they would do

I doubt the Avs do the lightning trade. Killorn is great but the lightning will likely get fleeced in a Killorn deal.

You're right. I'm so not worthy. I DID trade Girard, just wanted to edit so Kings give more for him. He's gone again. Lash me

Exactly why I thought Colorado would make a great trading partner. Why not offer something that doesn't totally suck. Colorado's prospect pool is arguably the deepest in the NHL; it's conceivable that they'd be less concerned with squeezing the Lightning for every ounce of blood, and more concerned with adding proven playoff experience. Colorado still wins this trade, so why not, I say! But that's me

Not one good one, hey? What would you change? And yes, never should have traded Girard. I'm aware and BOY do I regret it.

Why wouldn't they expose Kadri? Get him off the books to add pieces that they hope help lead them to the promised land. (?)

Kadri is better than whoever SEA would take with a normal protection list so it doesnt make sense to expose him let alone pay SEA to take him

Nichushkin is very strong defensively and although Killorn is good it doesnt make sense to take the player with the higher cap hit and retain 1.25M on top of that. Plus Bowers is more valuable and closer to an NHL role than a 3rd round pick

Girard and Donskoi are both good players with good contracts. It doesnt make sense to move both of those assets for a downgrade at forward and picks that are 2-3 years away. Plus the value is just way off

For the most part the contracts seem reasonable but Id rather sign Makar long term. 2 years is the worst possible term since thats the same offseason they would need to extend MacKinnon and sign Byram and Newhook after their ELCs end

The Francouz buyout also doesnt make much sense since he only has 1 year left and when healthy is worth every penny of his contract plus more

To listen to a lot of Avs fans, the animosity with Kadri suggested he needed to go. But I see your point.

Would you make the Nichushkin / Killorn trade if Bowers weren't involved? I was never too impressed with Nichushkin. And Donskoi is drastically overpaid, don't you think?

I figured they'd just kick Makar's big money extension down the road when Johnson comes off the books. (?) In fact, a lot of the Avs contracts, my additions included, come off the books in 2 years. . . Figured this was their window to win before big money goes to MacKinnon, Makar or anyone else. . . when it will get harder to build around them.

But that's just my thinking. Thanks for your input. If I may say, I don't get the feeling there's much appetite for change on your end. Are you happy if they come back with pretty much the same roster?

Even if Kadri were to go he still has value and a 2C would have to be brought in to replace him. He wouldnt be given away for nothing let alone paying SEA to take him. And tbh I havent seen much animosity towards him from Avs fans anyway

No Nichushkin is one of the Avs best defensive players and is on a fantastic contract. regardless of the Bowers/3rd swap this doesnt make sense to do for a team that is close to the cap. How is Donskoi overpaid? Under 4M AAV for a guy who was on pace to score 50 points in an 82 game season is pretty good. Hes outperformed guys like Arvidsson the past 2 seasons and everyone thinks Arvidssons contract is great

If they bridge Makar Id expect it to be 3 years to avoid that huge offseason, but imo a long term deal is better for both parties. The cap savings from not doing the Killorn/Nichuskin trade alone should cover most of the AAV difference between this and a long term deal anyway which avoids the headache of having to sign the best 2 players and best 2 prospects on the team in the same offseason

Im not opposed to some changes but I dont think they need to change much, especially not core players. They were the best team in the regular season and even in the Vegas series they outplayed them in 3 of the 6 games without their 2C and it couldve gone either way

You make a good point however Sakic counts his pennies and makes sure to maximize value for the Avalanche. He’s not known for giving up prospects.

What was fan reaction like when he traded 2 second rounders for Toews? I know they're not prospects. (yet!) Just curious; I am fairly new to CapFriendly

The value was absolutely great for Colorado. Took advantage of Islanders cap situation and got a great defenseman for cheap. Avs fans certainly loved the deal. Definitely a possibility we see Sakic try and do something similar with a Tampa player like Killorn and get him for cheap. Although I think the value in this trade is indeed fair, I’d expect Sakic to try and give up the least amount possible.

When compared to the pay structure of the players around him, looks pretty fair. I think he gets at least what Nichushkin's making and definitely not less than 2 million. It's only a 2 year deal . . . time to see if he keeps taking steps forward. A lot of money comes off the books in time for MacKInnon's 12 million!

    Nuke >> Jost. Jost tops is about 3 x $2M. I could easily see him getting 2 x 1.875M

I am not a fan of keeping Jost around for anything in the top 9 unless he plays W. Today he is a 4C max but has limitations in the FO dot. If he could improve there, then that really opens doors for his future.
