Description

Honestly idk how Lou won GM of the year. So many 5+ mill contracts to guys who don’t deserve them.

Anyways
Bring back beau, Pelech, sorokin.
Sign Bellows to cheap contract but give him PP time to actually grow with skill guys
Trade picks to shed cap
Early is unfortunately the odd man out

Bring up Salo. He should be ready for the NHL after his year in the SHL.
Sign Rittich for a 1B option

No matter how weak this team may look on paper, we all know they are going to be an incredibly disciplined and structured team that will win games and go far in the playoffs.

Forwards
1st line- Honestly Barzal is the only person here that should be on a 1st line. Hopefully Wahlstrom develops into that guy who can be along Barzal. Also. Lou. What in the world is that Lee contract my goodness. NTC too??? That is going to be awful in about 3 years.
2nd line- Most consistent lne for NYI in the playoffs. The again Barzal was playing with Uncle Leo. Still a slid 2nd line
3rd line- JG should help Wahlstrom and Bellows develop some more. Limited mins for the prospects but at least jG has some offense in him
4th line- We know what they’ll do
Defense
1st pair- Pelech proved himself to be elite defensively and Dobson had a suppring 7 pts in 19 playoff games. He should be ready for more min.
2nd pair- Salo with Pulock. Reason I didn’t have pelech-pulock was so Salo can have a partner who is elite defensively and let Salo explore his offensive upside.
3rd pair- Aho-Mayfield. Weakest point tbh along with the 1st line but with this team everyone plays a 200ft game so they’ll have the help they need.
Goalie
Sorokin will be elite for years to come and Rittich will be a solid backup that can help take 35-40 games away from sorokin.

Personal rant: I'm somehat a fan of this team. Mostly Tavares was one of my favs but now its Brazil and Tavares is like that one ex we all hate. Anyways, this team will never get any respect. Every game they won the past 2 yrs people say "oh it's the refs". You don't get to the ECF 2 yrs in a row just bc of refs. Not to mention, this is the only team what has pushed Tampa to 7 in the past 2 yrs. Furthermore, refs are part of the game, Every team gets missed calls. It's part of the sport. When will people finally understand this is a disciplined and structured team with a small percentage of fans that make the fanbase as a whole unlikeable?

Sure Lee’s contract might not age well, but he was on a 37 goal pace before his injury and hes one of the best forwards in the league at generating high danger scoring chances. The contract is buyout friendly and the isles are a win now team, so it’s not a big deal

The only players that don’t deserve 5 mill are Leddy and Bailey.

Personal I think the islanders are underrated, they are well coach, every player buys into the system, it’s like watching paint dry but very effective system in the playoffs, if they could find a way to shed a couple warriors and insert a little more skill they’d be a serious contender for the cup.

I don’t think the palmieri trade was so outstandingly amazing that he shoulda won GM of the year lmao, really not sure how he won it, he didn’t do much that was big in the last year (plus he lost a top pair defenseman in Toews for two 2nds and gave away a 7th for coburn for some reason, who proceeded to play exactly 3 regular season games for the Isles). The Barzal/Pulock bridge deals were fairly standard and he didn’t exactly have a great draft. No notable splash in free agency. Timashov certainly isn’t moving the needle. All in all it makes no sense how he won tbh, just because his team made it to the quarterfinals again? If anything that should be a testament to the coach.

Isles are a sleeper team with serious upside and threat, unfortunately terrible contracts are the only thing holding them back. I think he robbed GM of the year tbh, should've went to bergevin imo

Baffling he won GMoty with a team that almost entirely isn't his. Garth Snow accounts for Sorokin as well so key. Singing Varl*amov low hanging fruit.

Hiring Trotz may be his key notable success but again low hanging fruit, it does seem like Trotz's system fits the team well, but tough to confirm ultimately...

We still have very limited ways to evaluate HC impact

Anyhow it's just a mess

Not only did he not get rid of big bad contracts (weber doesn't have a clause / is perceived highly) but he signed multiple new ones; now they're screwed

That Pelech contract seems light. You overpaid for the backup goalie. The islanders are impressive. I never know how they do it (I do, it's having one of the best defensive coaches to ever do it). Barzal is elite, I don't know what else to say there. I will say the Lee comments surprise me. I don't know how much it was just Barzal carrying it, but he looked really good last year and this year to me.
