Gotta be Neal for Keith it just seems so obvious. You are retaining some salary there so I like the Keith koskinen idea. I don’t see Lavioe leaving without getting his fair chance, same goes for benson and McLeod I believe it is. I like what your ended up with here. I’d keep zadarov around a year or two

If Keith is coming to Edmonton then Neal is most likely going the other way. Hard to say who has more value, Keith is more usable on ice, but Neal has a much better buyout and could give the Hawks some more cap flexibility.

Hawks aren't trading Keith for Neal. Neal is not valuable, Keith still has a ton of value in a bottom 3 or 4 role, he's just not a top liner anymore or someone that can play over 20 minutes a night.

Keith has more value sure, but he also had some of the worst defensive metrics in the league last season, just because he can play over 20 minutes a night doesn't mean he should. I agree that he still has some worth as a veteran depth D, but he's not worth that much. Also because of his NMC he decides where he goes, if he says "I only want Edmonton", then Holland immediately gets the upper hand in negotiations.

There is no way Edmonton gives up Lavoie for Keith unless Chicago is taking both Neal and Koskinen which isn't going to happen.

Keith is a bottom pair defenseman at this stage in his career. At 2.8M, (50% retained salary) he is still ‘overpaid’ as a veteran bottom pair, but not drastically so.

What is he worth is the tricky part. Ignoring the lack of leverage CHI has, he might be worth a mid- to late-round pick. 4th to 6th round. I can’t see any team giving up 1,2 or 3rd round value for a #5/6 D on a slightly negative contract.

To the Oilers, I think Neal still needs a sweetener as his contract is negative value. Koskinen only has one year left, so not as bad, but still needs a sweetener.

I think Koskinen and a 4th for Keith is probably fair, or Koskinen and a lesser prospect. But Lavoie is much to good a talent to get included in a Keith deal absent another top 9/top 4 D going the other way.

He does because of being partnered up with rookies and also because of being played 23 minutes a night. He can't carry that weight anymore, but he is a good defenseman for 18 minutes a night and partnered with a decent experienced NHL defender.

Watch the games and you'd understand. At half retained, and barely any money in actual salary, he's got definitely got value as a 4th man on the 2nd line or 5th man on the 3rd line.

What's funny are the armchair QBs on here that don't watch him play and don't understand as such.

WHats even more funny is you think people only watch their teams. You know us west coast people watch the 5pm games and then the later games.

I am shocked that the Oilers gave up Jones and a 3rd with zero salary retention. Jones was likely lost in the expansion draft, but wow, a third and the full salary.

Holland must know something that the rest of the hockey world doesn’t see, but hey, gotta swing for the fences sometimes...

I think this signals likely buyouts for Neal and or Kosk.. or Keith is skating 20+ a night in the top 4.

If I was an Oilers fan... I’d be worried, if I’m a Blackhawks fan... awesome work!!! The other Jones is likely the next big move!

People who don't watch Keith every game, and or don't know hockey all that well, think he's a liability. He's still positionally good, has great edge work, great stick work and strong on the defenders. His speed is average (used to be much better) and he doesn't have the shot he used to, but play him at 18 minutes a night and he will be good. He also brings leadership to a team that needs it. This is not a bad trade for either side, although retention of $1M to $2M would have been fair as well.

I’ve watched Keith for years, and I never said he was washed up, or couldn’t play in the NHL. He is 38, so injury risk is higher than a 25 year old, but he’s a very solid 4-6 Dman. He isn’t a top 2 dman, and isn’t going to give the Oilers 30 minutes a night against the other team’s top line(s). He also can’t carry a young partner the way he could a decade ago. If the Oilers resign Larsson, he’s a good #4 who brings plenty of intangibles.

Do I think he’s worth $5.5M for the next 2 years against the cap... no... bit he should still contribute on and off the ice. I just don’t like the cap space it ties up for the Oilers, it will be 2-3M that they can’t spend on a top 6 winger or goalie.

Value to Holland. Time will tell I guess if he actually has value. No Oilers fan agrees with this trade. Brutal.
Kassian signing brutal
ATHANASIOU trade brutal
Marino trade brutal

So many more
