Is he? TB probably doesn't win the cup without him. He was THAT good this playoffs.

Doesn’t make much sense really. They might as well take a good young player like Foote or Joseph and then charge tampa through the teeth to dump a contract in a later trade. Most teams aren’t too thrilled with tampa right now so nobody’s lining up to help them out unless they move up the lineup for guys they’re willing to trade (i.e. there’d be interest in palat, but not tyjo), and seattle obviously has the most cap room.

Edit: To clarify, they could do this as a trade, and maybe get more from Tampa. They shouldn’t let Tampa buy the expansion pick though

I'd argue we don't win either cup without him. He's going to be protected in the expansion draft.

They literally have 4 hall of famers

And brayden point

And Cirelli Sergachev

And Gourde Coleman TJ in depth roles

I'm soooo very tired the of "Tampa don't win without x depth guy" malarkey narratives they're literally one of the most loaded hockey teams of all time 🙄😑😒

Hm.

So then you get his declining years at a hefty cap hit

While cal foote enters his prime cost controlled

As a kraken

Idk sounds not great bob

At 31 he is beyond due for a decline though

Especially with so many NHL minutes logged

😬

If he’s protected you lose Cernak, or if you protect 4 D then you lose a top 6 forward that has positive value, like Palat or Killorn, for free. Feels like they should try to trade those guys if they’re the ones that are expendable as they can bring value back when getting rid of the contracts, and Seattle likely won’t take McDonagh for free if he’s exposed (they’ll take Foote or Joseph in a 7-3-1 protecting Hedman/Sergachev/Cernak imo).

Foote could easily be Koekkoek 2.0. The idea is to win now, not hope Foote develops into an above replacement level defenseman.

And does McDonagh's style of play age poorly? No. I have no issues with his contract going forward.

I wonder what it takes for a mcdonagh deal to Seattle then send him back half priced, or is that loophole closed

They can have Palat or Killorn for free. McDonagh is more important than they are. And don't start thinking like the Vancouver fans who think Cernak is somehow not going to be protected.

I never thought it made sense for them to leave Cernak exposed, but it equally doesn’t make sense to protect McDonagh imo. It seems unlikely Seattle selects him, and if they do, well you’ve got Sergachev as a top 4 LD and 6.75mil cap room making your off-season much easier. It might even be better long term, his decline could come at any time now, and you’re not losing a promising young asset. If you lose Palat or Killorn for free and pay to dump TyJo, is that a better off-season than losing Joseph or Foote for free, recouping a decent package for Palat or Killorn (maybe as much as a 1st, probably more like a 2nd and prospect), and then paying to dump TyJo? The way I see it, you’re choosing between the return for Palat or Killorn and one of Joseph/Foote, and as I think Palat/Killorn have more value than the kids, I’d be more inclined to lean towards taking that package and losing one of the kids (could probably recoup a similar quality asset and an additional piece).

yep. I think tampa honestly will stay competitive but I dont think its gonna be 3 cups in a row. Watch them prove me dead wrong lul.

I think Tampa will go cheap good veteran depth with some ahl graduates.

Trading away Killorn is different than losing him in expansion. I'd just hold onto him and see if he's taken or not. If Killorn is traded then one of Gourde, Palat, and our young players would be taken.
