Maple Leafs without Reilly

Created by: Janasazi
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2021
Published: Aug. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. We can't afford to keep Reilly past this season. Defensemen are being paid A LOT and the Leafs have to get something before he goes. If we can get a good defenseman in a trade, I think we should. If it's not Vince Dunn, let me know who you would trade Reilly for.
2. I think we could potentially package Kerfoot and Mikheyev together with a pick or 2 for a potential top 6 winger to play in the first or second lines.
Trades

  2. Mikheyev, Ilya
  3. 2022 2nd round pick (SEA)

Seattle has Gio, Oleksiak, Soucy, Lauzon and Dunn on the left side. Aside from the fact they have a glut of LD's, Dunn is a solid cost-controlled young dman. Why are they trading him for one year of Rielly when there isn't even any room for more LD's?

I wanted to model what Columbus did with Seth Jones. They found a team that wanted to sign him and then extend him long term and give Columbus a lot of assets in return.

What team would you trade Reilly to?

To be honest I don't think anyone is really a good fit RIGHT NOW. Most of the teams that had glaring issues at LD have addressed those issues. I think you have to reevaluate come the deadline when teams have to replace injured players, etc...

Maybe NJ, but they're probably not willing to part with much at the moment.

The thing is if we have to re-evaluate at the deadline for a Reilly trade, it would kind of imply that the season didn't go well and the Leafs are sellers at the trade deadline.

One thing that Dubas was undeniably an epic fail in doing was getting assets for expiring contracts. We let so many players walk for nothing.

Yeah, it's a tough situation. Maybe Philly could be a destination with some retention? They've been making some whacky moves and still have some space at LD although I'm not sure if they have any prospects trying to make the jump.

EDIT: Scratch that. I forgot Sanheim is filing for arb.

2. Most teams are set at forward, even this early in the off-season, and those that aren't are primarily looking for fourth-liners and extra-depth players, not a middle-6 guy like Kerfoot. Like Reilly, I think you will have to wait until the trade deadline to make a move with him.

IMO if Rielly is to be traded the teams that make the most sense:
NYI, CGY, LAK, CHI, STL, SEA
