Never said Bobrovsky was a valuable piece, He's a major cap dump. But in reality neither Keller or Schmaltz have that great of value either. Only one that has major value is Jakob Chychrun. You wont get anything of value for Schmaltz i can tell you that right now. He's way overpaid for what he brings to the table.
Agree that Schmaltz and Keller aren't top line forwards on a contender and aren't as valuable as Chychrun. I think this deal only works as a whole, because without dumping Bobrovsky, Florida can't make the other offers, and without getting big upgrades at other positions, Florida would be crazy to pay what it would cost to dump Bobrovsky. Let's break it down:
I think Schmaltz is worth Tippett, 2nd, 3rd. That's almost a deadline price, but with five years left, Arizona has no reason to sell. I added Schmaltz last and he put Fla over the cap so I threw in Nutivaara to balance it.
@LGuy54 posted a Bobrovsky thread where
@dopplsan got a couple likes for saying the cost to dump Bobrovsky is three 1st round draft picks. I think that's fair, because his remaining salary is a lot lower than his cap hit, and his buyout is even lower, totaling just 14 million actual dollars (but more cap, and over a lot of years). You can look back over the cost of cap dumps, but I think a 1st gets about $5M? If they don't buy him out yet because they think he still has on-ice value, that's on Arizona. Hey, he might bounce back? Here's the discussion that inspired this post: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2814652
Keller is a capable 1R on a fair but not amazing deal, with term. He doesn't score a ton, relative to the league, but he does very well relative to his team, so on a better team, he should do better. That's the logic Florida used in getting guys like Duclair, Bennett, and Reinhart, so whether or not you think it's dumb, I think they'd be comfortable offering Denisenko, Heponiemi, 3rd, 7th. Not a great deal, not a horrible one. Loads Florida up to win the Cup before either prospect is likely to make the NHL. Can they get someone better for those assets, with term? I'd be surprised. Who do you have in mind?
That leaves the 'Yotes giving away a 23 year old #1 defenseman on a great contract for Lundell, Priskie, 1st, 3rd. But they have to, to get the rest of this done, because Florida would be crazy to pay three 1st round picks just for cap space, with no way to fill it. They only way they're realistically considering three 1sts to dump Bob is if it also lands them some great supporting players to help them win a Cup.
