Expansion propositions

Description
Obviously both trades are made prior to the expansion draft.

1) this has a lot of moving parts but can be broken down into 2 parts. First, JVR and Zaitsev for Vatanen and Ritchie. Zaitsev is far and away the most valuable piece in this deal as he's a very good top 4 RD and is exempt from the expansion draft. JVR's value should be about Vatanen's so in this part of the trade the Leafs are giving up more value. The second part is Dermott, Rychel, and a 2nd for Montour and Cogliano. Here Montour is the most valuable part. He's a young, good RD that should fit in the Leafs top 4. Cogliano becomes expendable with the acquisition of JVR and would give the Leafs some more depth and Veteran playoff experience. The Ducks get and good Defensive prospect to continue to develop good defenceman, a bottom 6 LW to replace Cogliano and a 2nd to balance out the value. Overall it looks like it favours the Leafs but there is significant value in the Ducks not having to protect Zaitsev and not losing Cogliano for nothing.

2) This trade only works if the Penguins have given up on Maatta. I think he's still young and should be a very good top 4 defenseman for years to come but can sit in the 3rd pairing gaining his confidence back until Gardiner hits UFA status. The Penguins can then protect Letang, Schultz, and Dumoulin on defence and gets them a 3C and another speedy depth guy.

The Leafs protect:
3 forwards: Kadri, Brown, Komarov;
5 Defencemen: Reilly, Vatanen, Gardiner, Maatta, Carrick;
1 Goalie: Anderson

Expose: Martin, Leivo, Cogliano, Fehr, Marchenko, and Marincin. Pick one.

PS. In both trades the other team can add cap dumps ending this season or next like Stoner oround whomever on Pittsburgh.

So you want 2 key pieces of the future for the ducks, and arguably our most consistent forward this year as well? I understand your explanation, but BM is not going to do that deal. Montour looks more confident each game, and Murray isn't going to part with him.

If anything might as well just do a Vatanen for JVR straight up. No need for the extra pieces.

I don't think its as much about the Penguins giving up on Maatta as it is Schultz's emergence as the better 3rd defenseman. If the Penguins can get a legit top 6 forward or a good 3rd line center prior to the expansion draft I think they will move him.

Vatanen and Montour are by far the most valuable pieces in that trade and it would take a lot more to get them. Vatanen > JVR & Montour > Zaitsev. Then Cogs and Ritchie are more valuable than the remaining pieces so that's what throws that trade off. JVR has very low value to the rest of the league right now (IMO) because he is basically a rental and Vatanen has a great contract for a top-4 Dman and PP1 QB.

JVR is on pace for another 55-60 pt season, so he has a lot more value than you might think, just look at what the wild gave up for hanzel at the deadline, and he is not even close to the player JVR is. I agree this trade is probably too many moving parts to get done, but JVR and Vatenen are essentially equals in this trade. Also, if the ducks want to make a move before expansion to not risk losing VAtenen/Rackell/Silfverberg for nothing, they will not be able to ask for the moon in any trade, because they would be moving from a position of desperation. The leafs should look to exploit this in my opinion, although I think the trade would be more along the lines of JVR-prospects and/or picks (2017 first, Kapanen, Dermott, etc.) for Vatenen-Montour-Stoner (cap dump)

Losing Rakell and silfvy?!?!? Bieksa has already been confirmed to waive his NMC. Protect Fowler, Lindholm, and Manson on D. Forwards would be Getzy, Perry, Kesler, Cogs, Rakell, Silfvy, and Vermette, Leave unprotected Shaw, Boll, Bieksa, and Tokarski.

Vatanen for JVR would work fine before the expansion. Instead of protecting Vermette then JVR would be protected. Both teams would be doing what they need to get them to the next level. Though I would love to be a fly on the wall when JVR walks into the locker room and meets Manson.

Haha that actually croused my mind when making this. And I agree with your previous post about JVR for Vatanen I was just bouncing out a bigger idea.

I feel a stare down would happen and then they would talk it out but you never know. Hahaha. That was a good hit by Manson and glad it didn't do any further damage to JVR.

Although i think Vatanen is too offensive for what the leafs need, I'd still take him in a heartbeat. JVR for Vatanen straight up. I know people are having fun on this site, but these kind of deals don't happen where team swap 4 for 4 guys. JVR for Vatanen would even be the type of "hockey trade" we don't see very often.

I (like you) have been a proponent of Leafs protecting five Dmen. But that Ducks trade has too many moving parts, just to net one Dmen. I"d want to keep Reilly, Gardiner, Carrick and Vegas free Zaitsev.
So the issue is how to get let's says Vatanan who has to protected from the Ducks. Montour and Ritchie both NHLers in the NHL on ELC, protection free aren't likely to traded by the Ducks.
Vatanen for JVR and Rychel and another AHLer. To fill that other Dman spot,,,the Wild and Isles have "excess Dmen that can't protect.
