It Wouldnt Surprise Me at the Deadline

Description
I don't want to give up the picks, but this is definitely something that the Caps will consider at the deadline. The left side of the defense is a pretty big question mark, especially if Kempny can't come back to full strength. Given Laviolette will already trust Ekholm immensely given their time in Nashville, I fully expect something like this to go down, whether it's the right move or not.

I don't want to get into the specifics of his value on the market, just that it would be something along the lines of a first and second round pick.

I kinda doubt Washington are big buyers at the deadline.

Does it though? Any instances of a number 2 d man getting more than a 1st and 2nd as a rental ?

If it's a rental, I would think any team inquiring about Ekholm is probably interested in extending him since he is still probably a top 30 dman in the league.

Savard who is at best a #3 returned a 1st and 3rd as a rental

Sure, but can you give me an example of a guy that got the kind of return you’re suggesting?

I think you’re suggesting an absolutely unprecedented return. Can you think of any time in say, the last 20 years that a guy like ekholm has gotten that kind of return?

Pronger with 1 year left was traded for 2 1sts, Lupul and Sbisa

Shattenkirk to Washington for 1st + 2nd (Cond) + Sanford

EK65 trade

Burns + 2nd to SJ for Coyle + 1st + Setoguchi

Seth Jones trade

Trouba for Pionk and a 1st

These are just a few examples I could find during the 20 min intermission.

The shattenkirk one is pretty good.
Pronger, Karlsson, and Jones are number ones. Pronger and jones weren’t deadline deals. Wasn’t trouba an RFA?

I do think the shattenkirk one is a good one though…certainly an exception, rather than the norm though.

I think calling them #1's can be a bit misleading as Ekholm has been an elite #2 most of his career and could definitely be considered #1 caliber on aome teams

Too expensive for a rental. Waive Kempny to Hershey to get his groove back and sign a UFA or two.

I mentioned in the description that I wasn't going to get too picky about the return lol. I was more focusing on the idea that the Caps will want to bring in Ekholm
