Improving the team

Description
Even after what looks to be a solid season. G takes a good, but modest pay day to stay with the flyers. Johnny hockey isn't worth more than 7 mil a year imo. He'll probably search for more and may get more, but I would put money that he wouldn't pass on a chance to play with the flyers at a slight pay cut. Martin Jones isn't ideal again, but Flyers could benefit from bringing him if he continues to look decent, and especially if he is willing to accept a cheap deal to stay in a comfortable environment with Dillabaugh as coach. Risto might command more money than 3.5. If he does. Just let him walk. If the analytics finally catch up with him in contract negotiations maybe he'll be willing to accept less, and the Flyers retain him for less than 4 mil AAV.

Flyers Trade Sanheim to Montreal and package up a big deal to go and get Chychrun. Sign Jeff Carter to a cheaper deal, if he's willing to be a placeholder as they prepare Foerster to move up.

Sorry, but Wings not eating 7 million dollars in cap for Brink, and then giving up a 3rd round pick. Yzerman has not once in his tenure with the Wings taken on a cap dump, and doubtful he does now.

I don't think its a big cap dump tho. JVR has been very solid and brings in a veteran net front presence to fit on the 3rd line for 1 year. And he's definitely brought in a cap dump. Marc Staal? I'm fine with not getting any picks back too, but Brink is a good prospect to get to take on 1 year of cap for veteran presence that actually plays at a solid level. Obviously this is very far out, so maybe its not possible by then, they may spend big on someone this offseason. But if they miss out on a big free agent, I could see them willing to add 1 solid prospect and 1 solid powerplay and vet presence for just one year.

Actually I just reviewed their situation and they could afford to bring in like 2-3 big free agents next year and still afford to fleece the Flyers to take on JVR who is still solid and could bring a powerplay and vet presence to a young team. I'm doubling down on that one.

MTL can’t trade CAR 1st it’s going to ARI and MTL will pick top 10 with their own pick

I don't even care about the 1st. Gimme a future 2nd rounder. Worth opening the cap for Chychrun trade anyway hahah.

With the Detroit trade you are adding 2 wingers to a team that has too many of them already and is in desperate need of centers. We will have at least another season 1 more season of a flat cap and van Riemsdyk comes with a cap hit of $7M. If a trade like this was to happen I wouldn't except anything coming back but future considerations. More than likely Brink will return to Denver for his senior season and then he doesn't have to sign with the team that has his rights. Just like Petruzzelli did to Detroit in the offseason.

I don't love it either, but I'll break away from the other Wings fans in this thread and at least say your reasoning and thought process is sound. As already touched on, we wouldn't be sending any real asset back (think a 5th round pick or middling prospect at most), but I wouldn't hate this for a short term move to accrue assets.

Fair points. It wouldn't be hard to adjust the trade for the things you mentioned. I looked at the Wings situation and they have plenty of cap to work with to get 2-3 major free agents and still take on one year of a JVR 7 mil cap hit. Its a 1 year hit, for a player that adds to the powerplay and brings a veteran presence and is highly respected around the league. I think on a 1 year deal, the price to "cap dump" isn't as high as many people think especially with a team that even if they get busy next offseason, will have the cap to do it, and like I said JVR is far from the "dump". He had a very solid season last year, and has been solid so far this year as well.

Most people would've said Buffalo aren't getting a 1st for Risto. I'd be fine with a 2nd, but when the Sanheim contract happened there were reports that front office personnel around the league said the Flyers will be able to flip him for a 1st.

I disagree on Chychrun. It might not be quite enough, but its not that far off.

**Edit my Sanheim for 1st rounder report was a misunderstanding... It said a Metro Scout said Sanheim will be a number 1 trade deadline target. My apologies. I'm definitely okay with Sanheim for a 2nd rounder straight up or even a 3rd. Like I said above. It'd be worth anything to make cap space to trade for Chychrun. Hell just add him to the Chychrun deal.

I like the idea of bringing in JVR, I was actually making an AGM the other day that I didn't bother finishing that brought him in. I just had the flyers sending a third to Detroit, I think it's reasonable.
