Matthews is awesome. Having him for two years until he hits UFA is not.

I think Matthews will resign if he goes to NYR. He sees they have a great core and culture, unlike TOR.

Oh? Then why haven’t they been good? We give the leafs a lot of crap for their stars disappearing in the playoffs, but at least they get there.

I agree completely, but we aren’t paying for the 10 years of him in a trade. Basically it’s what 2 years of him are worth and a 1st for negotiating rights(in theory). I estimate 5 1sts of value but that my opinion

We are allergic to win a cup. We are pretty relative to Toronto.

We are the youngest team in the league and we were just rebuilding. Last season we weren’t projected to be in playoffs due to youth. Leafs are actually in their window and coming to the end of it

I think it would need to include Lafreniere, Kakko & Fox.

You realize I'm a neutral party, here, just taking suggestions from the peanut gallery and finding common ground, right? Save your heckling for the movie theater.

We? You on the team? In management?

Anyway, young teams make playoffs all the time. If the rangers have this excellent culture, why haven’t they? Aren’t great culture, stars that perform, and rebuilding kind of mutually exclusive concepts?

Fox alone gets it done. But ya, they might want 1 or both of the other guys.

Grow up. I’m giving a very clear suggestion. Make the deal closer in value. You’re selling 2 years of Matthews, he isn’t worth the package you put out there. Now if they are all on a 2 year deal and UFA at the end of it then sure, that’s fair value. You really need to incorporate term and RFA/UFA into the equations.

“They” if that makes you happy. I’m no where near good enough to play for them, or be drafted hahah

As for culture, this is something that is ever changing otherwise using your theory, no team has a good culture if they don’t win every year. Our😉current culture is different from the culture we😉 had 2 years ago, and different from the culture we😉 had when we made it to the finals and conference finals 3/4 years. The kids need to grow into men, and it’s happening. Is Marchand or McAvoy the same size and strength as the day they were drafted? Nah, they are stronger for sure.. that’s part of the development process. As you can see now, we’re near the top of the league and the stars have been off to a bad start, the leafs are near the bottom because their stars are off to a bad start. Maybe that’s part of our culture too, not relying on 4 guys. You don’t need to agree, just good for thought

Now that offer sheets are a thing again, your logic says there's no point trading for three prospects who could all just end up playing for Carolina by the time they're good.

Matthews was on pace for 65 goals last year. He's got at least 30 goals in each of the last five years. Zibanajead has broken thirty goals twice, and is 28 years old. Matthews is 24, so realistically, the Rangers have to pay for how much better and more consistent of a goal scorer he is, and how many years younger he is.

Three years of Nils learning to play in the NHL for three years of Brodie in his prime is a steal for the Rangers, by the way. Do you actually think there's a chance Toronto takes less than this, or do you just enjoy typing?

So I looked this over and it turns out Toronto doesn't end up with enough cap space here, to extend Lafreniere and Chytil in two years. They start with 8.5M in cap space, above, but then next year extensions kick in on Rielly and Zibanejad, and take up 5.7M of that. Then also next year, they have to give raises to Kase, Engvall, Kakko, Sandin, and Campbell. That isn't happening. They're downgrading a few spots to make that work. The year after that, Kerfoot and Holl walk, and the team is able to extend one of Lafreniere or Chytil, depending who is doing better. Maybe the cap goes up by then, maybe they get some LTIR cap space, or maybe they make a trade, but it looks like Toronto is better off just keeping Auston Matthews. I'm as surprised as you are, obviously. Tune in next week to find out if water is wet.

Opening night roster I believe CBJ and NJD were slightly younger just saying.

To be clear, a Rangers fan posted a lowball offer last night (I'm not saying it was or wasn't Drury. I wouldn't know), with some inflammatory comments in the description claiming he thought Matthews wouldn't want to stay and be a hero in a city that loves him. I'm posting a fair price as a Caps fan. I hope both these teams lose, and I don't care whether they reach an agreement, but this is what Matthews costs.

If you think it's a lot, build and post the Rangers' side of it, and tell me you don't like the future of a team with Matthews, Miller, Reunanen, Schneider, Fox, Lindgren, Panarin, Strome, Barron, Gauthier, Kreider, Shesterkin, Georgiev, etc.

Brodie is not a cap dump. He's better than Nils right now and for the next few years, probably. But this barely leaves the Leafs room to sign RFAs the next year, and after that they need to start making trades for cap space, the same as the Rangers.

If you want to tell me I'm a Leafs fan, I"m not. If you want to tell me you don't want to pay the price it would take to get Matthews, I'm glad to hear it. I didn't want to read a hundred posts of Rangers fans trying to convince Leafs fans that Gauthier, Barron, Schneider and a 1st were going to save their franchise. Have a nice day.
