Why do Toronto fans want to move JVR so bad?

Created by: NickC1988
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2017
Published: Mar. 15, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
He's playing well, I'm sure he's mentoring the young kids, he has a very reasonable cap hit. Maybe if the leafs fall out of the playoff race he's moved at the deadline but is there any reason to trade him? Same scenario with Bozak. Vancouver's core is old. Sedins are on last leg, they have a good group of young defensemen waiting for more time, add Dermott to that list and get a potential shutdown C

Jvr and Bozak as lazy defensively. They both dissappear for long stretchs of time. The only reason they look better this season is Marner is carrying their line.

Nick: Count me among the ones who do not necessarily want JVR and Bozak traded. Well, just for picks when there is no one on the team to replace the traded pieces. A good trade yes, but there is seem panic among some Leaf fans about their upcoming UFA status in 2018. Admitting I hope they are not resigned in the summer of 2018 because I'm optimistic that Leafs will be able to find younger, cheaper, better replacements.
Continuing that thought some Leafs fans think " All UFAs must be traded because you can't let walk away from nothing." Seems like the Leafs are the only club that has this roster scenario. Don't upcoming UFAs help your team now and are needed to make the playoffs and god willingly, make the playoffs?

I would like to see them moved due to their lack of intensity and lack of willingness to play a 200 foot game. I firmly believe they have benefited from Marner driving that line, not the other way around. I would rather not pay them on their next contracts for inflated numbers as a result. Trading while they have term is to maximize their assets. It is a rebuild afterall and letting assets leave as free agents would be very irresponsible. Once the team is established and competing for the cup annually then they can keep pending ufa for cup runs and risk losing them for nothing.

Agreed. JVR is a very lazy player - doesn't backcheck hard enough at all, not good in his own end, very bad at making a pass out of the D zone (he almost always chips it off the glass and out, which is bad when he isnt under extreme pressure because it gives the puck back to the other team). He is very good in front of the net and can finish, but he does not drive play at all and disappears too often. He is only useful when he is given the puck in tight - he never creates chances. JVR was my favourite leaf player going into this season but it seems like every game I want to trade him more and more. Agreed with Palhal that I dont think it would be useful to trade him for picks, unless they are very high quality picks, but if he can fetch a legitimate defenseman in the offseason im all for it.

jdp: I still don't get it. If the Leaf are in a playoff run at TDL, do you want to sell all upcoming UFAs? It's telling your other players, this season doesn't matter. A team isn't usually built....miss playoffs for years and then suddenly a Cup contender.
There are about 22 teams that have no shot of being a Cup contender this year, and didn't see all of those teams trading their UFAs. As I said, Leaf fans are unique.

Leafs should trade JVR plain and simple. They have Kapanen who is probably better and need to trade from a position of strength to help the D core. At the very least the leafs have set out a plan and they should stick to it. Plan is get young and ready to compete for the next decade. Another argument I'd make is this. If we had a good prospect or D man and say a mid first. Would you trade that for a JVR. No. Cause the value of the youth and future isn't worth the short term boost of JVR.

Matty: If your talking to me about JVR. I'm all for trading him especially this summer. He will get a return and the Leafs still have the cap and time to get the pieces in place for October.
I might have trouble trading him at TDL, if the Leafs are in a playoff push, if the trade made the team weaker though. The Leafs even proved this year they were buyers by acquiring Boyle. So the plan isn't to get young at all costs. For some reason, people have misinterpreted all the ShannyPlan, especially the time line.
And your trade a good prospect and mid first JVR. ****, I would take a good prospect especially a Dman for JVR this summer. I would take this 4m or whatever in saved cap space and get a good veteran (even short term) to help the team next year. Yes, I would even take a mid first rounder for him, again spending that 4.25m next year for something better and needed.
