What is wrong with Alexis and Kaapo plus Lineup Changes

Created by: Finski

Description
Alexis Lafreniere has had the unflattering title of "bust" thrown onto his name, even though this is just his 2nd season in the NHL. Yes, while it is true that everyone (especially NYR fans) wanted Lafreniere to develope out of the gate into this McDavid-Crosby type (going off the hype he was given in his draft year) this has certainly not happened and Alexis has been jumping around the bottom 6 for a healthy chunk of this season. The initial assignation to the bottom 6 came when he found chemistry with Blais and Chytil on the same line, but unfortunately this line has failed to last (primarily do to injury). My honest opinion is that Lafreiniere will develop into a star in the NHL, but he may take a few more years than people initially had hoped for. But this does not mean that the NYR should walk away from Lafreniere, quite the opposite if the NYR have any hope of being able to be a dominant power in the NHL for years to come getting rid of young stars like Kaapo or Alexis is not the way to do it. I personally feel that if Lafreniere is not getting his game into shape by the next 5 games I would ask him directly if he would like to spend a few games down in the AHL to work on his game and skills needed to flourish in the NHL, after all players being called better than Lafreniere (Raymond and the like) spent 1 more year developing in their respective leagues before being pushed into a top 6 role this season.

As for Kaapo I am less worried (in fact I am not worried at all right now) he has found chemistry with Strome, and while it is true that Panarin and Kaapo are not the best fit on the ice after they learn to play to each other's strengths then that line can be one of the best in the league. As for the lack of points, again I am not worried, since Kaapo should have at least 3 assists and 4 goals so far this year (unfortunately he has been robbed every single time and just looks a bit snake bitten currently, but that all can change in the blink of an eye).

I moved Panarin to play 1st line LW since Zibanejad and him work together like a well-oiled machine when together and Lafreinere - Strome - Kakko looked like a beast line in the preseason (especially in games against the Islanders and Bruins).

But hey these are just my 2 cents on the situation, let me know what you guys think is the problem with these 2 young players in the comments and no trolls please.

Cap friendly has a tendency to over react to prospects abilities with very small sample size

probably the same issue as in MTL and that is poor deployment/favouring guys over the age of 30

The only 'wrong' part is the unrealistic expectations towards 20 year olds who -yeah- aren't quite where they could be, but both still quite good

Lest we forget the 2019 draft was not great and Kaapo Kakko was much more of a Dylan Strome level prospect than a Barkov, Seguin, etc.

Lafrenière a bit more perplexing

Maybe the pressure is overwhelming

So we shouldn't... y'know... add to the pressure 😐

Nothing wrong with LaF and Kakko....sure- would like to see better numbers from a #1 pick in D+2 season and a #2 in a D+3 season....but in the end these guys are doing what young guys do: learn what it takes to survive in the NHL. Patience is required! Especially when they are trying to learn on the fly in an organization like NYR- which is more concerned with pleasing the instant gratification demands of the corporate suits...as opposed to nurturing the (albeit not sexy) at times slow grind necessary to develop young players.

I’d probably be concerned if they had poor attitudes in regards to everything, but at least from the outside and what we see, they appear to be in high spirits, admittedly snakebitten for Kakko and willing to learn. The fact that Kakko has already developed a defensive side of the game and they both talk about getting better shows the Rangers should be patient and let them develop.

Kakko...guy is snake bitten. In the end if he continues working hard the points will come....may not ever come in bunches to make him a PPG player- but that's OK...in the CAP era also need guys who are tough to play against, good defensively, etc- yet don't put up box car stats to warrant a CAP hit in the stratosphere.

LaF...still don't see the WOW factor everyone seemed to drool over prior to draft...but he does look like he can develop into a real solid top 6 if not top line player.

Both guys seem to have a good attitude...so important- up till NHL both guys' experience growing up was probably that of easily shredding through contemporaries of far less talent...now that they're in the NHL- even the "lesser" players they compete against are way better than who they've played with and against till now....Good attitude- not worried...if they can only get Krav on board with that!

Yeah if he was of a similar mindset I think we’d be okay. Without him, things get tougher. Thankfully we’ve got other guys like Mika, Panarin and Kreider to help shelter the heat on the kids considering the money those 3 combined make. In due time, all will be alright.
